Good morning! Happy working mom check-in day (no matter what day you're checking in)! I love that these check-ins tend to last all week as an ongoing discussion. Sorry this week's post is rather long, but hey, I warned you in the subject line
I read a really really interesting article this week entitled "Why You Hate Work". It was an op ed in the New York Times about how workplace satisfaction has plummeted in recent years from overworking, brutal hours and the impact of new technology making the flood of information and accessibility never-ending. I tried to find a good excerpt to pull out, but really the whole entire thing is quoteable and worth the read. But here are a couple snapshots:
"Demand for our time is increasingly exceeding our capacity — draining us of the energy we need to bring our skill and talent fully to life. Increased competitiveness and a leaner, post-recession work force add to the pressures. The rise of digital technology is perhaps the biggest influence, exposing us to an unprecedented flood of information and requests that we feel compelled to read and respond to at all hours of the day and night."
"Employees are vastly more satisfied and productive, it turns out, when four of their core needs are met: physical, through opportunities to regularly renew and recharge at work; emotional, by feeling valued and appreciated for their contributions; mental, when they have the opportunity to focus in an absorbed way on their most important tasks and define when and where they get their work done; and spiritual, by doing more of what they do best and enjoy most, and by feeling connected to a higher purpose at work."
"A truly human-centered organization puts its people first — even above customers — because it recognizes that they are the key to creating long-term value. Costco, for example, pays its average worker $20.89 an hour, Businessweek reported last year, about 65 percent more than Walmart, which owns its biggest competitor, Sam’s Club. Over time, Costco’s huge investment in employees — including offering benefits to part-time workers — has proved to be a distinct advantage."
"The energy of leaders is, for better or worse, contagious. When leaders explicitly encourage employees to work in more sustainable ways — and especially when they themselves model a sustainable way of working — their employees are 55 percent more engaged, 53 percent more focused, and more likely to stay at the company, our research with the Harvard Business Review found."
I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts. So that's the theme for today - why you hate work!
1. How is work going this week?
2. Do you agree that employees are more satisfied and productive when the four core needs mentioned above are met? (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual). The article also pointed out that these can be met by targeting 3 areas: value, purpose and focus.
3. Does your work environment do a good job of meeting your own needs or do you "hate work" because your employer is creating a culture or environment that is lacking in some way?
4. How is everything at home this week?
5. GTKY: What's your zodiac sign? Do you feel it is on the mark in line with your personality? Is it a fire/earth/water sign? Does this have an impact on your personality do you think?
