Talk to me about kids in taxis

Next month my mom, Nicky and I are going on a trip (flying).  We're not bringing Nicky's car seat because we won't need it at our destination and neither my mom nor I can carry or install it.  I'm a little concerned about the transfer from airport to hotel, though.  I hate the idea of Nicky in a van shuttle without a car seat on the freeway (taking a car seat isn't an option, it's a long story). I found a big coach bus shuttle that doesn't go right to our hotel, but stops at another hotel 1 mile away.  I'm thinking about taking the coach bus to that hotel, then going in a taxi for the last mile. 

What's the deal with kids in cabs, are they allowed?  how to people in cities like New York do it?  Surely they don't carry around their huge car seats...  Anyways, any light you could shed onto the situation would be much appreciated, TIA.

I went to Chicago with DS2 and DD2 when they were 5 and 1. We had to take a taxi twice and I didn't have carseats or boosters. I buckled DS2 in a seatbelt (just the lap belt) and put DD2 in my lap - and prayed the whole ride. I didn't know what else to do??

Have u tried calling ahead and seeing if taxi or hotel can send child seat with?

Also each state has their own rules on transportation in taxis. U can look into that too

There's an option on Uber to request one with a car seat. I would do that. I may be in the minority, but I am 100% not comfortable in a taxi without a car seat.

I always wonder about this too and have no advise other than calling ahead or trying uber.

We went to Punta Cana when z was 14 months. I reserved a car with a car seat. We get there and there was no seat and the driver only spoke Spanish. I held him on my lap for the 20 min drive on a highway and kept telling the driver slow please in Spanish. I felt like we had no option but I was uncomfortable as all heck!!

Maybe ask Parenting about the specific city, or ask Trip Advisor or something. Is there other public transport? I know nothing about what people who ride in cabs do, but with your DS at 3.5, it probably wouldn't freak me out so much as if you had a younger child.
