Oy vey, where to begin...
So I was scheduled to go in Thursday night for an induction, starting with Cervidil overnight and then Pitocin Friday morning. Thursday morning I wake up to pee around 3:40 AM and discovered bright red blood when I wiped and the amount was not getting lighter as I wiped. Cue the panicked phone call to the midwife. She said it was probably just my bloody show, but I could come in to get checked if I was worried. She thought they would probably send me home until my scheduled induction later that night.
We got to the hospital around 4:15 AM and they started with regular monitoring. The midwife came and checked me and said I was still only about half a centimeter dilated, like my appointment on Tuesday, but the blood when she checked me was thicker than a bloody show so they would just admit me then, rather than sending me home to come back that night. I was also contracting every 10 minutes or so but they were not strong enough for me to notice. Around 8 AM, they started the Cervidil and the strength of my contractions picked up and within a couple of hours, they were every 3-5 minutes. They were going to stop the Cervidil at 8 PM and around 6:30 PM, baby's heart rate went up to the 160-170s, which made the nurse nervous, but made sense to DH and I because nights were always when she was most active.
They took out the Cervidil at 8 and I had only dilated to 1.5-2 cms, which was super disappointing. The midwife wanted us to take an hour to eat some dinner and shower before trying a cervical balloon, but they decided to keep me on the monitors in bed until the heart rate came down. Her rate never came down after 45 minutes and our explanation made sense, so they increased her baseline to 160. We went and ate but I continued having regular, strong contractions. When we got back to the room, I asked about how the balloon would affect my contractions and the nurse said they would be more painful, so I had a little meltdown. Baby's heart rate started to stay in the 170's so they decided to let me labor on my own and see what happened.
By 1 AM, the pain was unbearable so I asked for Nubane to manage. It crosses the placenta to the baby so with her heart rate being off, they said no, but they could do an epidural. I agreed and the epidural was in by 1:30 AM. They checked me again and the midwife said I was still a 2 but she could stretch me to 3 with her fingers. She offered a c-section at that point because of the heart rate issues and lack of progress, but I wanted to see what would happen with the epidural and she agreed.
Around 3:30 AM, I woke up to the nurses flipping me back and forth on my sides and giving me an oxygen mask because now my and baby's heart rates were off. They were able to get them back to an OK level by having me lay on my left and wearing oxygen, but the midwife was worried. She said she could check me again, but if I hadn't made much progress, I would go for a c-section. To both of our surprises, I had progressed to a 7! She agreed to let me continue laboring, but said if the baby's heart rate was off at all again, I would go for a c-section.
Around 5 AM, I felt a gush so the nurse came to check me and said it was my bloody show. She then checked me and reported, I was fully dilated to 10! We were all really happy that I could deliver vaginally. Shifts were changing soon and the baby was still in a high position so they had me labor down until a little after 8 am. The new midwife on duty came in and broke my water. She was concerned because there was meconium and blood in the amniotic fluid. The nurses had me start pushing around 8:30 AM to see how I could do. The midwife came in to watch and noticed the baby's heart rate was decelerating when I would push and not come back to baseline quickly. When contractions were coming, the urge to push was so overwhelming, it was painful not to push so they would let me push every few contractions. They put an internal monitor on the baby and her heart rate was getting lower and lower. The OBGYN on call was in another c-section so they grabbed another OBGYN from the office and she reported she couldn't do a vacuum assist because the baby was at too high a station so we had to do a c-section. Then on one push, a gush of blood came out and they rushed me to the OR.
In the OR, they had to increase my epidural 3 times to numb me appropriately, but I was continuing to bleed so they threatened to put me under general anesthesia if they couldn't get the epidural strong enough in the next minute. They tested my reaction one more time and it was finally enough. They opened me up and discovered my catheter wasnt draining my bladder fully. Within 2 minutes, DD was out and DH announced we had a girl.
Then they reported DD had a temperature so the pediatrician needed to get her to the nursery and start antibiotics. I told DH to go with her and had a meltdown over not being able to. They brought her over next to my head and she sucked on my face for a minute before being taken to the nursery. The OBGYN continued to talk about the blood I was losing and reported I had placental abruption which likely caused the original bleeding the morning before and the bleeding when I was pushing. DH came back to me because DD's temperature was down by the time they got to the nursery and she would be there a while getting antibiotics. They also didn't want DH to see her IV going in. They finally got me all sewn up and back to the room and I had a breakdown about everything.
She came in after about an hour and a half and we did skin-to-skin to our post partum room. She has continued to struggle with her white blood cell count and now, she is having issues with her blood sugar. We are just taking things a step at a time. It has been super stressful but I love her so much already, it is all worth it. Thankfully, we will be here until Tuesday so it gives her time to get things figured out before we go home.
TL, DR - Went in early the day of induction due to bleeding. I wasn't progressing and baby had heart rate issues. Epidural helped me progress but then I started bleeding due to placental abruption and baby's heart rate was low so they rushed me to an emergency c-section after 29 hours of labor.
