I am starting to try and figure out what to do with my basement design. Specifically I'm planning to do a built in area in the family room. My main question is if all of the trim in my house is med/dark stained wood, do you think it would be weird to do white built ins.
This is the color of the woodwork with the sun shining right on it (the end of the island)
Something along these lines is what I'm thinking. We will have an electric fireplace
I don't think it's weird at all. They're completely separate spaces and you're not going to be seeing both at once so it won't look unmatchy. I love white wood work.
Well, you'll be able to see it on the trim around the room and the doors, so it definitely will be visible in the same space. We are also doing a mini bar right around the corner and haven't decided if we do that white also or the same wood as the rest of the cabinetry.
No, the built ins are in the basement family room. You won't see the kitchen cabinets but you will see the wood work is what I'm getting at. The picture of the cabinet was just an example of the color of my wood.

So the rest of the wood work in the basement will be the darker wood? I thought you meant you were doing white in the basement. Reading fail.
Yes. I was thinking it would be cheaper to get cabinets at home depot or ikea or something and make our own built ins instead of paying the cabinet company $$$.
trtlcrzy Agreed, stock cabinetry would definitely be less than custom. Also, typically stain-grade wood is the most expensive, so if you did opt to have built-ins, er, built, it will be less expensive to go with paint-grade wood.
With all that said, I think white built-ins would be fine with stained trim. I looked on Pinterest and Houzz and saw some examples that I thought looked good. White is pretty classic and my personal preference is to only use stained built-ins in a room such as a study or library. I also like the idea of a lighter tone in the basement (vs. dark wood) to keep things light and bright. You could also consider another color (off-white, a shade of greige, etc) that could be kind of interesting and also complementary to the wood trim.
I need opinions. We are putting a bar into the basement family room. If you were purchasing a house, would it be a deal breaker to not have a sink in the mini bar? We are thinking something along these lines:
DH is leaning towards wanting the sink and I'm ambivalent.

trtlcrzy would not be a deal breaker for me! My parents house had a formal bar with a sink in my childhood home, the bar was *ahem* well utilized, but they never ever used the sink!
Is the plumbing already roughed in, making it a cost factor to have one?
It's not roughed in, no, but we have bare studs so it's not a huge deal to put in.
This is the space at present:
I'm planning for the mini fridge to be in the corner. There has to be access to that curvy pipe going across the wall so it will behind some sort of door. The plumber is DH's bff and he was saying there might be a little finagling to get the pipes over there because of the ductwork, but he can do it.

That's kind of what I was thinking. There is going to be a basement downstairs too so people wouldn't have to go upstairs to get to water. DH mentioned using it so that people can pour things down the sink.

If it's not a big deal to put in, I'd definitely do it! I bet you'd use it a lot more than you think, especially if you'll be playing down there with the girls or having company down there.

This. My dad has a bar off his study and the sink does get used.
With that said, if it didn't work out for some reason I don't think it's a deal-breaker in the event you sell.
We are thinking about finishing our basement this winter too. We were just taking about what we would do for a bar area and I am leaning toward no sink. We plan on doing cabinets along the back wall and a mini fridge sort of like you pictured and a big high top table and chairs. I just think I'd rather have more counter space than a little sink
Our good friends painted the walls while were doing basement renovation a bright cheery color, put down an inexpensive rug and hung a bunch of cheap fluorescent tube lights. Their kids were little at the time (maybe 5 and 6) and this allowed them to play as much as they wanted and leave a relative mess without having the living area an explosion of kids toys.
