Right now, LO goes to bed at 6:30pm. At what age can I expect him to be able to stay up later? I just have no clue what a bedtime of a 1, 1.5, 2 year old is. All I know is my kid is cranky if he's up past 6:30. I'm dreading it with the summer coming.

By 6 months my first was staying up until 7:30-8 and at 2 years old still goes to bed at 8. With DS, I put him on his sisters schedule from day 1 so he has always gone to bed at 8. He takes a quick cat nap around 6 though in order to stay up later.
I have no idea what time J went to bed when he was younger. He was not easy to put down so he would usually fall asleep on the couch and I would move him to his bed. Now at almost 3 he typically goes to bed between 8-9 and he has been like that for a while. But Max goes to bed at 7-7:30 every night now. I think it depends on the kid. Sometimes when it stays light longer they stay up a little later.

I think it's totally kid dependent. My kid has been going to bed around 8 for awhile now, that's been the earliest it's been. He'll be 6 months on Sunday. He naps around 9:30, 1:30, and 4:30. His 4:30 nap usually lasts until sometime around 5:30, we start bedtime routine around 7 and he's in bed by 8.

It won't let me edit my response so I meant to say, my kid hasn't been in bed any earlier than 8, but my good friends kid went to bed between 6:30 and 7 until he was almost a year. Now at almost two he goes to bed at 8 c
Can I ask why you want him to bed later? My LO's bedtime is 6:30-7 and I love all of the free time for myself and with the HB! My sister's kids are 3 and 1.5 and go to bed around 7. I imagine when they're around 4-5 they will go to bed later? I guess it just depends on the kids.
DS has usually been in bed around 8 since birth. There were a few months that he went to bed at 7. Now we aim to have him in bed between 7:30/8. He'll be 3 in a month.
I think it depends on your kid. DS apparently doesn't need as much sleep (he gets 12 ish hours total). I could probably put him down earlier, but I don't want to get up earlier. My sister has 4 kids, (8, 6, 4, 3 months). I think bedtime there is 7:30/8.
LOs bedtime hovers around 8 pm give or take. I would like to keep it there. It gives time in the evening for him and DH to play, and for bath time, but we don't go to bed until about 10 so it gives us a couple hours to ourselves as well.
My LO has been going to bed between 9-10 for months. I SAH and don't want to be up super early so this works for us. LO is pretty flexible so I think she'd adjust to whatever bedtime we set, given time. But like PP said, I'm sure it varies by kid. Some LOs seem to set their own bedtimes because they need something specific.

You can wiggle bedtime around a little. Our LO was going to bed 6:30/7:00 but waking up at 4:30/5:00 which was too early for us. So we pushed back bedtime by 10-15 minutes every night. Now she goes to bed 7:30/8:00. Wakes up at 6:30/7:00. We are all happier.
DS goes to be between 7:30 and 8. DD was about 7 months old when she started going down at 7:30. She is two now and still goes to bed between 7:15 and 7:30.

I'm not really in a rush for an earlier bedtime, since this one works (sleeps 6:30-6:30ish). But, DH doesn't get to see him during the week due to the earlier bedtime. Also, it's just a tad early to be home from our daily activities and it's going to be so bright out once we change the clocks.
I don't miss or mess with bedtime because he doesn't nap well, so he's super cranky and ready to sleep at 6:30pm. I SAH, so I do love the break from the baby, but DH works 12-14 hour days so it's not extra time with the DH since he's usually not home until 8-10pm. Although, on the weekends we do enjoy it.
I guess all of that is a long way of saying I'm just looking forward to the day of a 7:30 bedtime because it won't be such a rush to get home for bed. But, If it doesn't happen for many years that's ok too!

Thanks everyone. I guess I should have figured it was a "depends on your kid" kind of thing. We've tried the cat nap about 5-6ish a few times, but he fights it. Drifts off pretty easily at 6:30 after his bedtime routine, so I guess we will stay with it for a while.
It does depend on the kid, but I also think the seasons have some affect. maybe I'm talking out my butt, but I feel like as a whole we stay up later in the summer.
My DD was always in bed by 8 or 9. we moved it to 7:30 when she started daycare at around 1. NOw at 3.5years her bedtime is 8.

Since DD1 was 6 months old we've started her bedtime routine at 7. We did a bath, book and then boob and she was sleep by 7:30. At almost 3, we still start at 7, but she's usually in bed by 8. She likes to play in the bathtub and we read 3-4 books before we say prayers and goodnight. I work, so she has to be up by 6:45, so if it's any later than this she's hard to get up in the morning. I would play it by ear and adjust if necessary.
How do you push back bedtime? DD goes to sleep for the night between 6 and 7 usually. I've tried to put her down for a nap at like 5:30 or 6, hoping to get her to go to bed for the night around 8, but she just sleeps all night. I can't keep her up until 8 because she'll turn into a screaming mess if she's been awake for more than 2 hours. She randomly went to bed for the night yesterday at 8pm and then slept until 5:45am. I would love to have that happen every night!

That totally makes sense! My DH works long days too. 3/5 days of the week he gets to spend time with her in the morning and maybe like once every week or two he comes home early so I totally get you. 7:30 would totally be cool and then you would still have a lot of alone time. My LO could probably stay up a little later but she still wakes up at 6/6:30 no matter when she goes down so I figure an extra hour of sleep is good. It also sucks because we do dinner after my DH gets home so it's looking like we won't get to do family dinners together. So I'm like do I cook early and eat with her? Eh
