@hazeldublin when you say "toughen up" I'm assuming you're asking when does that horrible toe curling initial latch pain go away. For me it started to dissipate around three weeks. I actually had to count out loud because it hurt so bad. One day H said "hey you only got to 7 that time!" And eventually it dwindled down to no pain around 4-5 weeks old. I nursed DS1 for two years and only weaned him a few months before I had DS2, so I know my nipples were still "toughened up". It gets better. If you have cracks, bruises or blisters though definitely re evaluate her latch!

First check in!
How old is LO? 4 days
How's everything going? Ok I guess. He latches great but has quite severe jaundice (he's been just below the cutoff for being admitted two days in a row now). Struggling to get him to stay awake and feed for more than 5 minutes at a time.
Any tips for dealing with jaundice?
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share? See concern above.
Cute- after he unlatches he likes to stay cuddled up with my boob.
Who is your biggest BF cheerleader? DH and my mom are awesome. I couldn't BF my first and they know how much it means to me to make it work this time.

hikingmama222, sorry to hear about the jaundice. My DD was admitted to the NICU for 3 days for hers. The very best thing you can do is keep feeding him as often as he will allow since the breastmilk will help him poop out the bilirubin. Are you home from the hospital? Some diaper time in front of a sunny window will also help. If you're still in the hospital, I would ask about getting a bili blanket brought to you just to help his levels come down faster, especially if it's severe enough that they're concerned.
How old is LO? 3.5 weeks
How's everything going? We're doing great! My little piggy has been eating a lot more frequently so I think we've hit another growth spurt and I can visually see her fattening up. I finally have a baby with chubby cheeks!!
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share? My older daughter is two and is also breastfeeding. She has shown interest in nursing at the same time as the baby. It totally melts my heart to see them both nursing together.
Who is your biggest BF cheerleader? My friends. All of them have extended breastfed or tandem nursed their children. It's so nice that breastfeeding is the norm among my group of people.
GTKY: what song has been stuck in your head lately? Children's songs all the time. Lately it's been the Finger Family song (Daddy Finger, Daddy Finger, where are you? Here I am. Here I am. How do you do? etc.)
hikingmama222, in addition to nursing as much as possible, get him in the sun. You can just strip his clothes off and lay him in the window or a sunny spot for his naps. Hang in there! My guy had jaundice too.

Even a little bit at a time will help! My now 12 week old was jaundice until he was about 7 weeks, and it only got better when I was able to take him outside more.
Don't be alarmed if you start to see green poop every so often if you do this. When bilirubin leaves the body quickly and in larger amounts baby's poop can be green in color when it's normally yellow. This happened to us after a morning at the beach- the next day his eyes were almost white again!

We left the hospital on day 2 (at 24 hrs old). We've been going to the public health nurses every day to check levels. He's fallen just below the threshold to being admitted for phototherapy the last two days. We're feeding around the clock and have started supplementing because he just doesn't stay awake long enough to have good feeds. We've had 1 poop each of the last 2 days.
No sun the last 2 days as its been snowing (I'm in Canada) the second I see sun you bet I'll be putting him in it!
@snuff9861 congrats on your new little! Right now you have colostrum which provides all the nutrition and immune boost your baby needs. As she continues to nurse, your milk will come in (usually around day 3-5 but sometimes earlier and sometimes later). It's normal for newborns to nurse very frequently. It's important to feed on demand, including to early hunger signs such as rooting, smacking lips, bringing hands to mouth.
You will know she's getting enough by watching her diaper output. Until your milk comes in, you can expect one dirty and one wet diaper per day of age. So one wet and one dirty on day one, two wet and two dirty on day two, etc. Once your milk comes in, baby should have 5-6+ wet diapers a day, and generally 3+ dirty (dirty diaper output will change in the future but newborns generally go a lot).
