I'd like to switch out my diaper bag. I've had it since my 2.5 year old was born and now that the twins are 14 months I'm finding that I can leave the house with much less but I still have this full blown diaper bag to carry around. Any tips? I like the backpack idea. Is that practical? Also, what do you all keep in your diaper bag if you don't have infants? 1 diaper per kid, wipes and some snacks and water? I'm never out longer than a few hours.

I went for a large messenger bag with lots of pockets instead of a proper diaper bag from the get go. It's just big enough for my laptop if I want to retire it and use it just for myself. It was crammed full in the beginning, but at least their several changes of clothes were smaller back then!
Depending on time of year, I have 2-3 diapers per kid, wipes, diaper cream, changing mat, wet bag, hats (sun or warm), extra pair of socks each, an extra shirt each, a small cloth bandana bib each, snacks, and a cup of water each. I also keep a small clutch in it for myself, with stuff like lip stuff, bandaids, tampons, and some baby tylenol. It's starting to sound like Mary Poppins' carpet bag, haha. It'd all fit into a medium sized backpack quite easily, but I prefer having a strap around my body and the bag easily accessible on my hip.
I either hang it on the back of our double stroller or wear it -- unless I'm wearing the twins, I'll leave it behind, because I keep an extra set of changing stuff in our carrier's pocket, and DH will carry their snacks with him if we're out for longer in that format.
Depends on your style I guess but I use the Madewell transport tote. Not sure if it's going to be big enough for 3 but it works for us for now. I keep just one diaper, wipes, my wallet and other 'me' things, and snacks.
Ok we have a winner. I think I'm going to get the Ju Ju Be bags. That makes the most sense for what I need. Thank you ladies. And dke2010 you win the prize. Unicorns and rainbows are coming your way
