So...MIL drops off apple crisp for us on Monday. Tells me it's dairy free. It was delicious and I ate a big serving of it. I also shared some with LO. Tuesday evening a rash appears during her tub, which happens some times and used to happen to DD1 when she was a toddler. I did use some hydrocortisone so she wouldn't be itchy in her sleep...though she wasn't itching the rash.

This morning MIL confesses that there was butter in the apple crisp. Said she "is not used to thinking of dairy as butter" & remembered while she was in the car yesterday. I know it was an innocent mistake...but WTF, MIL?? She's been around LO 2-3 times a week for her whole life...including when she was suffering before the allergy diagnosis! She's seen me decline butter numerous times.

Sort of related: WTF to people who don't think butter is dairy but think that eggs are. I've had to tell people "milk comes from cows, eggs come from chickens" more times in the past year than I care to remember.

So, I'm not sure if that rash is related to the butter or not. But I'll count the fact that we didn't see a big disruption in her sleep and she's been acting normal as a win...and hopefully a step in the right direction.

One more time and then I let it go: WTF, MIL??

@ali7p ughhhh! I'd be so mad too! We work so hard to keep the dairy out! My H got me a falafel thing last week and forgot to say no yogurt on it. I took one bite and knew. I was so mad. Not only did I not get lunch, but LO reacted for a day...to the one bite. in his defense, H finally did apologies...honest mistake there. But still...he knows how hard I work on this.

Tumble-tot is four months! I've added corn and fish back and so far no major reactions. I'm still off soy, dairy, beef, gluten and nuts. Pedi wants us to start adding them back at 6 months. So, I'll do that in two months.

I'm off gluten, because of my intolerance, not baby's...should I add in a little so he's exposed to it at some point? My reaction is stomach ache and inflammation. Not awful, but not great.

Also, any suggestions for safer baby purees to try once we get there? I'm thinking rice or oatmeal first...then avocado? Sweet potatoes?

Things are ok here. This is my last week of maternity leave and I am nervous about pumping at work.

I recently got an Instant Pot and so far I am really pleased with the results. It is so hard to find and have the time to cook meals that are completely allergen free and I am hoping the IP will help me keep on track when I am back at work.

We did banana first. Then avocado, then (I think) sweet potato. The only purée she reacted to was carrots. But she can have them in smaller doses (either in mixed veggie purée or small cooked pieces).

I just remembered that lo had a mucusy BM on Tuesday morning. I thought it was odd at the time but couldn't trace it back to our diet (it gets more complicated as they eat solids). But I guess it was from the butter.

@ali7p I would be upset too!! I also don't get the people who don't think butter is dairy or that other things like hot dogs and lunchmeat can contain dairy.

@ali7p, WTF about the butter thing. Like... how?

tumbleweed, Haiiiii IMO, you could test Tumbletot on gluten directly when he starts solids by feeding him some pasta or something. No reason for you to suffer. Also, if he eats it directly and does react, it'll be in his system for less time than if you eat it and then it's in your milk for a bit (per the pedi, as far as cow's milk, anyway).

@ali7p, I am so sorry for you and your LO! I'm so nervous when I eat something someone else has prepared.

Sorry I don't think I made it to update last week. I've been rather stressed. Margs had a positive skin prick to rice and the allergist said to keep feeding her rice- but she'd also recently had a couple of nights of screaming and back arching so I am like HELL TO THE NO. Right now she is allergic/FPIES/intolerant to corn, rice, oats, and wheat. I am hoping quinoa will be safe for her. I tried giving her some chia seed pudding made with coconut milk and she had diarrhea for about 24 hours. Maybe it was just the laxative of the coconut milk?

Her reflux is still pretty awful at night- endoscopy showed some redness and inflammation, but not anything the GI wants to change treatment over. He tells me if we can get all of the offending foods out of her system, the reflux should stop. He and the allergist think the next step is formula, but having reacted to two formulas (the allergist said elecare has rice in it and that is the one we had to go to the ER for!??!!) so I am extremely hesistant to try anything. Besides sleep and rough nights, she is happy and growing and thriving, so we are just trying to accept that this is probably as good as it gets until she starts growing out of stuff- who knows when that will be!

The ped yesterday was very complimentary to us. She said that in the thousands of kids she's had in her long career, Margs is only the 3rd she's had present with these issues, and the other two kids had to be hospitalized for FTT at some point and were behind on phsyical milestones (I know that this relatively common)- so she can tell we've been working so hard to keep Margs on the right track. It helps to remember that what she is going through isn't common and that generally she is doing very well.

I am also starting to worry about keeping her on the nexium for so long. If her esophagus was cranky though, surely that means we should be keeping her on it, right?!!? GI/allergist/ped haven't expressed concern about it, but I am. I've been reading awful things about PPIs. It's hard to reconcile all the advice. Moral of the story, I've been rather stressed and just trying to come to terms. It would be easier, I think, if it almost 1 year old now she wasn't still loosing foods. :/ Sorry for the novel.

The oral challenge went okay. We brought cookies with baked egg (gf, dairy free, nut free). He did fine on the first two attempts, but broke out in hives on the final round. Also, he started blowing raspberries and making faces that made me think that his mouth felt either strange or uncomfortable on the way home from the appointment.

The allergist said that he's not quite for baked egg ready yet, but she still 95% certain that he will outgrow most of his food allergies. In the meantime, he's prescribed to eat one bit of cookie every morning. And we're holding off on all other food challenges until we see how he does with the cookie prescription.

I haven't tried the first recipes yet, so no rush. I'm trying to push more solids so hard to introduce new foods into my diet and pretty sure coconut is an issue now too.

Anyone know offhand if coconut would be like others where the oil can be safe but the meat (protein) wouldn't be?

From what I've seen, that can be the case for anything. Processing can make a difference. Margs is ok with coconut oil. Jury is out on coconut milk.
