Im sewing my own OS fitted diapers but I know they wont fit a newborn. For the NB stage, it's seems prefolds and covers are the way to go economically. I'm buying a set of 6 excellent used condition covers. Do you think I would need more?
I'm planning on 36 prefolds for an every other day washing routine. Is that the typical stash number to go with?
When you buy used, is there something extra I should be doing or just put them in a typical wash cycle?
I had about double that for the newborn stage but I didn't have a washer and had to hand wash till we moved. Maybe two more covers; what are you going to do for wipes? Cloth wipes or the other kind? Your list sounds good to me.
And depending on how big baby is you may not use the newborn ones for long but you can save them or sell them. They resale value on newborn stashes is pretty good. I think DS wore newborn stuff for 6-8 weeks.
Ok awsome thanks @priss08. You're a trooper- hand wash? I don't know I could do it lol.
Yeah maybe I'll find another deal for another used one or two to add. I figured for NB I won't use them for very long. The person I'm buying the covers from only used them once and washed once because her baby outgrew them so fast.
I'm doing cloth wipes too. I threw some on my registry because they are pretty cheap.

I think I have 24 NB prefolds and they worked great for every other day. I didn't use them until her stump fell off, though, so was also mostly done needing to be changed every 5 minutes to two hours. Six covers was fine for us. I'd say you're good with 36/6 but if it's a good deal, snag a couple more covers.
I'd just wash used diapers one time to make sure they're clean - and sun out any stains.
We used snappis to secure them, which worked really really well. Elena wore the newborn size until at least 10 weeks (nearly 8 lbs at birth) so it's really not a huge long time that you need them, but the bigger sizes are comical on those teeny little legs.
When you know your very young baby is pooping, give them about 20 minutes to finish before changing! This will help you reduce the poop rockets across the room and changing a diaper again five minutes after a change.

It really wasn't that bad. I had a wet pail in our bathroom so they wouldn't get stinky or anything. Plus newborn poop is "mild" smelling. I just used some old school dish washing gloves that had diaper gloves written on them. It wasn't for a long time and now that I have a washing machine I'd never go back. Lol
I'm planning on it but haven't researched a ton. I have some that I bought during my previous pregnancy, and my cousin (who gave up on it) is going to send me her huge supply.
Once poop got more solid we didn't always wear a cover at home. But when you do that make sure you use the jelly roll fold or something similar. There's no sneak attacks that way.

That's awsome you are getting someone's left over supplies. The start up fees can seem overwhelming so I would have loved someone to give me hand me downs. But no one in my circle of friends or family have ever considered CDing.

I had looked for used newborn or small covers and have collected a variety of AIO, prefolds and fitteds. I was advised to have at least 35-40 changes and I have about 7 newborn covers, 6 AIO and a possible few OS that run smaller and may work depending on how big baby is.
I started cloth on my DS when he was one so the infant stage is going to be all new. I am now debating on disposable wipes or reusable. I always used disposable w DS since he had solid turds when I started and they'd go in a bag w the liner and trashed but w the newborn I wonder what a pain that may be instead of just leaving the wipes and tossing in the pail/wet bag.
Can anyone share their experience w the wipes? And can I make some out of something I may have at home like receiving blankets?
Question, should I use sposies the first week w the tar poop?
We still have our stash from the twins so we don't technically need anything more. I am, however, going to try and get a few more "convenience" diapers. We used essentially all covers and prefolds/inserts with a few fitteds that I made. I want to get a handful of AIO's in both newborn and OS and then we will be set.
mikaela20, I was wondering how the sewing is going? I loved sewing diapers for the girls before they were born. I wish I had the time these days to do more.
daisylola11 I used the disposable diapers I was gifted till that crazy tar poop was gone! Once DS started sleeping through the night on a regular basis he wore an overnight disposable. He's a heavy wetter and I just never found a cloth solution to keep him dry.

@priss08 I'm thinking of just doing that and not quite worrying about the cloth diaper for that week or so.
I actually tried to put a disposable on my DS for potty training recently and he ended up with an awful rash, not sure if he's just not use to it anymore but it worries me for this LO.
My son was a heavy wetter and the only thing that worked was a giant padding of a prefold, one regular insert and a small insert. He would leak through disposables, it was a pain.
daisylola11 I love my cloth wipes. They're just washed with the diapers, no big deal.
How many do you have? I don't want it to be overwhelming if it's a ton haha and I run out
I think 36. I have no qualms using disposables if I need, though. (We do disposable diapers/wipes away from home.) I definitely use fewer cloth wipes on a foul diaper, they grab more. I have a spray bottle of water for them. I don't think I've ever run out.
amacbaby I hav'nt started them yet, plans to do it on a weekend in November. When I say I will sew, I really mean I will help my mom sew them. She is an experienced sewer but I call her an expert now since she sewed my wedding and cocktail dresses for my wedding.
@justinslovo I'm ok to use disposables but figured im spending the money, might as well try to use the cloth somehow. Maybe I will get newborn diapers at my shower that I can use. I doubt our hospitals will give us anything free, but maybe they will be cheaper than the store ones.
Of BTW, that site you linked has been the best deal by far for diapers! With no shipping I decided to cancel my used cloth sales I was about make and got my newborn stash for $75 usd (100cdn) with free shipping! Their OS covers seems to fit newborn and bigger depending on the closure. So I got half/half to try them out. Thanks!
@justinslovo thanks for that! my sewing pattern included doublers so I'm hoping I won't have to buy those either. They will be 3 layers of oganic cotton- double loop terry, heavy bamboo, cotton velour. Omg I'm getting the itch to start this sewing project already!

we actually have a lady downtown with a store selling her own homemade diapers. When you're done with one you should post a pic!
I havent had time to read through the thread yet but wanted to suggest Lil Monkey Cheeks to you mikaela20. She is in Pickering, On. I cant recall if you are in the GTA or not but if so you can pick up your order for free. I have never paid more than $10 for shipping and my biggest order was 12 full systems.
My personal preference is Funky Fluff. They're a Canadian brand (made in China) and excellent quality. They have a really active BST group on Facebook.
