I saw an article today which said the active ingredient in my antiperspirant, aluminum zircomium, is classified at risk class C for pregnancy. Anyone concerned about their antiperspirant? Have recommendations for a new safer one?
Class C: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
H's opinion is the studies are usually ingestion at disproportionately large amounts, so he's not worried. I haven't looked up the actual study on animals to check. I think I'll pick up something new at the store today to use for first-tri and see how it goes.
While lost down the rabbit hole of figuring out why my first IVF failed, a friend of mine was telling me about all the research she did for her IF. One of the things was the aluminum in deodorant, so I too have been using Tom's for a few months.

I have never heard of this. I just checked the anti perspirant I used throughout my entire pregnancy with DS and am currently using and it's listed as the second ingredient. I have no intention of discontinuing using it as my doctor has never mentioned it being a problem.
I've not heard of problems with it with fertility before, but I have heard that the aluminum in it isn't good for you in general. That said, I still use it since I don't know of any good alternatives that keep away the sweat along with the smell. I would totally consider a switch though if I knew of something.

I've really enjoyed Tom's and haven't noticed any less smell or sweat control, but then again every body is different.
There are some other organic deodorants that I've come across but haven't tried. I think I picked Tom's because it smelled good and was solid (not slightly soft like some can be).

I already stopped buying aluminum and paraben containing deodorants. I've been using young living and Tom's of Maine. I'm going to attempt to make my own since I make similar body stuffs. Some days I actually go without, if I'm just staying home and not working out. I'm a little crunchy, and aluminum has been proven to cause alzheimers, so I steer clear.

Do what you are comfortable with but remember that because products aren't tested on pregnant women, they will ALL be class C. That means no studies have been done, not that there is any danger at all.
I also switched from deodorant with aluminum about a year ago for non-pregnancy reasons. There are several studies suggesting adverse health effects and I figured it was a healthier option to use other products.
maggie6424 & eucalyptus - Thank you for bringing up non-pregnancy concerns. I'm going to do a little research. I did already switch away from parabens and a few other common skin care ingredients because of studies done around those. I just didn't get as far as deodorant.
animaldoctor - Thank you for sharing, I believe I found that article during my spiral. I fully admit I have a worry/anxiety problem so I waver between being extra cautious because no human studies doesn't mean they aren't harmful, but at the same time, they might be fine. Thankfully my husband (who is a physician) is good at balancing out my crazy.
