We recently became a single vehicle family. We have convertible car seats in our van. But it occurred to us recently that we could be kinda stuck if there was an emergency while one of us was out & about, but we also realized we don't really have a plan for emergencies in place.
So any BTDT mamas, what happens if you have to whisk one kid to the hospital- do you bring both? What if it was ambulance worthy, can you bring both kids on the ambulance or would I have to drive myself and the other kid? All of this sounds terrifying- I know I have a neighbor who could hang at the house but there would be no car seat for her to bring the second kid if it became necessary, or for MH to call a cab. Do we just buy a pair of cheap car seats for this purpose?
We have taken both twins to the ER when one needed to go quickly. We have also left the healthy twin with family, when there was time to make the arrangements. Luckily, despite baby boy's health issues and numerous trips to ER, none have necessitated an ambulance, so no experience there. We only have one set of cat seats, too, but we generally leave the seats wherever babies are, so they are always available for whoever needs to take them somewhere (the daycare has a car seat corral for that purpose or we leave them with family when they are watching kids, etc). So far, that has worked for us, but twins are still in the carrier type seats. Might be enough of a hassle with bigger seats to make a second pair worth having.

Yeah, we did the same when they were in bucket seats, but the convertibles are such a hassle. W got a few bites of something with strawberries in it (not clearly labeled, ugh) and I couldn't get a hold of anyone that I could really LEAVE a kid with and suddenly all of this sank in and I freaked out. She was fine, she has so far only ever had a mild skin reaction but just the fact that I didn't have a plan in place really upset me.
Grandma has a set of convertible car seats at her house in case if emergencies. We also have car seats in each of our cars in case whoever was not driving the van needed to pick up a kid. Yes we have a crazy number of seats for our kids but I am paranoid about emergency situations that hopefully never occur. Fwiw, we have dionos in pair cars and the back up seats are harmony defenders. Everyone is FF now so we went with cheaper more longer lasting seats for the backups.
