Hi! I'm just jumping in here... my guy turned 1 in July and nursing is still his main source of calories. He's delayed and hasn't figured out how to drink from anything so the boob is pretty much it and it's important I keep going. Plus he's my last kid so I might nurse him forever
My right nipple has started hurting SO bad. Like when he latches it's like knives stabling me. But then even when he's not nursing it still stings and hurts to the touch. There is a white spot I can see on top and I was wondering if it was a vasospasm, but I don't really know what that is so I was guessing.
I did have a couple days spread out over the past couple weeks where I had a clog and half of my breast was hard as well but it went away. But omg my nipple still hurts so bad. Is it possible to have a clog remain in it even though the hardness goes away?
With my last son I had the same thing but on the left side. We were close to 1 though so I just stopped using that side and fed from the right until he weaned a couple weeks later.
What can I do? If we made it this far without any problems it wouldn't be a latch issue would it? I think he pulls more on this one, but it could just be that I'm more aware of it because it hurts.
With my girls I didn't have this issue at all. Just the boys.
Sounds like a milk bleb. They can follow a clog. It's basically a blocked pore on your nipple. They can be excruciatingly painful.
First you want to make sure it's open and no milk is still trapped inside. This can be done very carefully with clean fingernails or a sterile needle. If necessary once open express any old milk there.
Saline or epsom soaks can help speed healing. You can see if nipple cream brings comfort. I do a dab of bacitracin ointment 1-2x a day but I don't know that's necessary if you're not comfortable with it.
It can help to get the nipple moist and warm before nursing. A different position than usual may be less painful.
In my experience, blebs can take weeks to fully heal, but treating it lessens the pain. If your clothing is irritating it, I recommend lansinoh soothie gel pads. Breast shells may do the same thing.

I had thought a bleb was raised, right? Like a bubble? This is totally flat but it does look like milk is trapped. If I try to hand express it will leak a little bit of a clearer fluid when there is milk coming out everywhere else. I've tried scraping but nothing happens. I can do a needle but I'm afraid I'll end up doing it wrong. Do you just poke it? ETA just kidding. I read more and it says not to poke and not even to do it myself lol. So I'll try the other stuff first. Thanks!!

I had my first about a month ago. The pain was excruciating when he first latched. It took weeks for it to finally heal and for the pain to go away. The warm compresses seemed to help me the most.

I had the same thing happen around 12 months as well. Best I could figure was a bleb even though I didn't find any clogs around that time and even though I popped it open no milk would squeeze out. F was also teething at the time and his latch was funky so who knows. I was in toe curling pain for about a month. Coconut oil did the most to help and it finally healed.

It definitely sounds like a bleb. I would poke and pry at it in a warm shower. Then while moist put on nipple cream. It took like yummeecookee said a good month to heal. Hugs!
