So how bad is caffeine when breastfeeding, really? I've been having a cup a day since birth with no ill effects but this was a rough week for sleep and my one cup is just not cutting it anymore. Is there an amount beyond which I need to pump and dump? What are the effects of too much caffeine on the babies?

Honestly, this seems to come down to personal decisions.
FWIW, I drink at least three cups a day. When DS1 was little I tried just one cup a day....but he never slept. He was up all night. Wasn't the caffeine, I would only drink it in the morning.
Now I'm on my second baby....who doesn't sleep ever. So I drink all the coffee.
Officially, I think the recommendation is to stick to 200mg per day, but I would never pump an dump for coffee.

bocaburger - I have between 2 and 5 (yes...5 sometimes on weekends) cups a day and don't notice any difference in DS's behavior, fussiness, and/or sleep.
I have 2 every morning, then anymore are spread throughout the day. I figure if they're spread throughout the day the caffeine never builds up that much at once.

Drink all the coffee!
Coffee.
I think it's less personal decision, more individual reaction. I'm hyper sensitive to caffeine in general and it appears both my children are. I noticed early on that when I had a coffee my son would be wide awake for hours at night. No caffeine? Great night's sleep.
If you're not noticing an effect, you're probably fine.

But. I already have one kid who doesn't sleep. You are telling me that my second kid might also not sleep? Does not compute.

Don't worry! I think this special hell was designed specifically for me. I must have been someone awful in my past lives.
