Hi ladies! I could use some help. EPer here. I weaned my little guy fairly slowly, dropping pumps over a matter of a few months. Each time I dropped a pump I was really surprised that I didn't get engorged. So, down to one pump a day last week I finally stopped all together last Tuesday. Righty got a little sore and lumpy but it was manageable... until yesterday. Both breast are terribly sore and lumpy. I've done just a bit of hand expression but it was never anything I was good at. I don't have any flu like symptoms.
So my questions: Should I go ahead and pump to relieve the pain or tough it out? Will it go away soon? How long should I expect lumpy sore breasts? I read one article online that said 3 days, another 10-14 days and another 6 mo! 6 mo!!!
I'm wearing a sports bra but I honestly feel better without an bra at all.
So I'm not sure if this follows official recommendations, but this was what I ended up doing. I was down to 1 nursing session a day, and had occasionally been skipping that if I missed bedtime. I had decided to wean over a weeklong business trip. I got sore and lumpy around day 3. I had meant to bring my hand pump to be able to relieve a little engorgement, but left a piece at home by mistake. Like you, I was also never very good at hand expressing and didn't have luck with that. I got pretty uncomfortable. I think it started getting a little better around day 5. When I got home, I did nurse one last time, which drained me and made me feel much better. I never got engorged again after that.
