Hi ladies, I got news from my doctor on Friday that might require me to stop BF my DS. He's 6 months and I really wanted to get to a year, I have about 600 oz frozen as of now and I'm planning on freezing as much as I can until I get word to stop.
We have a standalone freezer in the basement. The only time we go in there is to store or take out frozen milk. It's not a deep freezer. Does anyone know if the time is 6 months or up to a year for storing? I started freezing in July. My research keeps saying that a deep freezer is up to a year but I'm not sure if what we use qualifies as a deep freezer. Thanks for your help!

And not to overstep but if the weaning is for a medicine I highly recommend checking with Infant Risk first. They are the leaders in breastmilk & med research. (806) 352-2519 M-F 8-5 central

Physicians receive little education about breast-feeding and even less training on the effects of maternal medications on the nursing infant. Yet, concern about potential harm to the nursing infant from maternal medications is often cited as a reason to advise discontinuation of breastfeeding. Overwhelming evidence demonstrates the benefits of breast-feeding and the deleterious effects that can result from premature weaning.
-- many moms are incorrectly told they need to stop BFing because doctors want to cover their own asses. some drugs are poorly absorbed/not absorbed into milk, other drugs are given to infants directly and are not hazardous if they are passed into milk, and it may also be possible to time your dosing so that the amount of drug concentration in your milk is minimized.
InfantRisk and Dr. Hale are the premier researchers on medications/mother's milk-- they will have the most up-to-date research. i would not trust your doctor's blanket recommendation because they are likely making a CYA recommendation not based on the current clinical research.
Per kellymom it's 12 months in a deep freeze because they are typically kept at 0°F whereas a freezer is closer to 30F.
Thank you! This is helpful. I'll give Infant Risk a call too but from Googling the medication, I'd have to stop BF.
They may know some safer alternatives if so. And if not, at least you know you checked with the experts and got all the info to make the right decision for you & your family, whatever that is :-)
