Both of my kids have had crystal clear signals of, "I'm ready for bed now."  Jack would pull both of his hands up, make fists, and tuck them under his chin.  Always.  

Rhys will koala hug us when we hold him, until he's truly ready for bed.  Then he will prop his chin on our shoulder and tuck his arms between his belly and the chest of the parent holding him.  It's incredibly sweet and 100% a failproof signal of "bedtime."

My kids get up at 5something.  They actually ASK to go to bed at 7.

Mac runs around like a wild child. He does laps around the house while screaming and giggling and chasing the dogs. It happens every night just before bed. After about 10 minutes of running we know he is about to crash so we go do bedtime routine then. It's not always the same time, but exact same routine and it's adorable.

I never give mine a chance to give me the tell. 7:00 hits and I send them upstairs whether they're ready or not because by that time mama has been at it for over twelve hours and she needs some time alone or she's gonna lose it.

My kids' body clocks seem to be in sync with the daylight.  They like to go to bed earlier in the winter, so we put them in their rooms at 7:00 and then let them read books or talk with their sibling they share the room with for another hour or so and if they aren't asleep by then we go in and turn off the lights and tell them to be quiet.  In the summer they sometimes don't go to bed until 8:00 because we like to go to the playground after dinner.

wineandcake, we also have the wild running around. It's been going on since the kids learned to run. They just get so silly and crazy at bedtime, but I'll take that over grumpy any day!

Logan literally summersaults into his crib. I usually turn his sound machine on, and get him in his pjs around bed time, once he is ready, he grabs his blanket, goes in his room, climbs on his Lego container and summersaults over the side of the crib. I have been trying to deter this, but he won't have it.

Anna never thinks it is bed time. So I just always put her to bed after Logan. She would stay up for hours if given the choice.

DS doesn't believe in sleeping. He'll stay awake asking for more stories for hours. He gets away with postponing bedtime far too often because we are suckers for cuddling while reading to him.

I feel you. DS woke up at 4:30. What.the.fuck. usually he's not up till 7-7:30. We brought him into our bed but no one really slept.

And before anyone suggests it, yes, we have tried keeping them up later, and no, it doesn't make them sleep later in the morning.

When he was little DS1 would try to hold his eyes open. It made bedtime a real joy. DS2 will do the lie down on the floor thing, but as a way to recharge the batteries. He grabs a throw pillow from the sofa, throws himself down on the floor and rests for a minute or two before starting to run around like crazy again. If he is sitting at the table or something he will just close his eyes and take a breather.

But we also have everyone in bed by 7, 7:30 at the latest, for everyone's sanity.

I'm with you dc2london. I've tried keeping DS up later in hopes of getting a late wake up, but alas, he actually wakes up earlier than usual.

OMG this. DH has a PhD in physics. He cannot cannot fathom how keeping the kids up until 8 does not mean they will sleep until at least 7am. He has tried this in so many different ways. It drives him out of his mind when the kids stay up until 9 on a summer night out and then bing pop awake at 6am. Not all things make logical sense.
