I am looking for some advice... My little guy is almost 6 weeks old and for the most part has been a breastfeeding champ. However all of sudden today he has started to freakout when I put him to the boob. He starts crying, pushing off, and kicking his legs. I can sometimes get him back on but he only stays for a little. He has never done this before he was even nursing perfectly fine this morning. I am not sure what to do. He does get one bottle a day and has been since three weeks. I go back to work in four weeks so I need him to take s bottle.

DD started doing this around that time too. Somedays it seems like it happens at every feed, other days it doesn't happen at all. Sometimes if I switch her to the other side, she's fine and sometimes it doesn't work. I've wondered about gas, fast let down, slow let down, ear aches, etc. Basically, I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm not sure why it happens, but I'm right there with you

DD is now 5.5 months and has gone through many phases where she does the same thing. It first started because I had a forceful letdown that she didn't like but she's done it several times since then.
What's helped me is to stick her paci in her mouth so she's calm and then quickly replace the paci with the boob. It's not ideal but it works.
You can try to hand express a small amount so there is milk on your nipple. Sometimes that helps motivate them so to speak, and if they have milk right there they calm down too.
Sometimes this happened with DS. I would take him into our smallest bathroom, turn off the lights and turn on the exhaust fan for white noise. This would calm him down enough so I could get him latched and eating.
It sounds like it may be the 6th week growth spurt?? When lo went through it, he was unhappy on the boob and unhappy off the boob. I wore LO a ton then, continued to feed on demand and kept reminding myself we'd get through this phase. Hang in there!

My LO went through a period where he would do this if his diaper was even a tiny bit wet. Probably something you've already thought of, but just in case?
DD has been doing this at night lately. I call it the 8 o'clock witching hour, but it lasts longer than an hour...
It's very frustrating! I have no advice because we pretty much use all the techniques we know and none of them last longer than 5 minutes. We just keep telling ourselves that this is just a stage and will pass (DD is 5 weeks old).
Just keep doing what you're doing, it's probably just a phase. Something you ate might have made the milk taste different all of a sudden, or the wet diaper thing mentioned above... it could be something completely unrelated. There were (are) many times I've been frustrated and worried about issues, but kept powering through. Some went as quickly as they came, and others took a bit more effort. If he keeps having an issue at the breast, I would offer a small bottle of pumped milk when you feel he's really starving and just refusing to nurse, but always, always keep offering the breast first and then maybe again after he's had an ounce or two from the bottle. Hopefully he will get over whatever it is quickly.
