you can either shorten the length of each session until it's so short it disappears, or you can lengthen the time in between sessions so that you eventually combine 2 into one. or you can do both. for the former, you can say, ok, we're going to nurse until i'm done singing this song, or until i count to 20, or whatever. this method probably works better with kids that are closer to 18 months and can understand a little bit better. for the latter method, distract LO with whatever to skip a session-- offer food, water, cow's milk, toys, activities, cuddles... you may not be able to accomplish this every time but you should be able to get into a pattern of dropping one particular session on most days... then move on to the next one you want to drop. hope that all makes sense. save the nursing session that LO is most attached to for last.

Trying to shorten sessions never really worked for me, what worked best was replacing it with something totally different. Instead of nursing at wakeup, we just woke up and went straight to breakfast. Instead of nursing in the afternoon, we went outside. Eventually when I dropped the naptime and bedtime sessions (the most important for her) we would read books in the rocking chair instead of nursing. I would also say "There's no milk right now, it's all gone" and my LO accepted that. She was a bit older though, 17-20 months when weaning so she could understand that. And yes, it took like 3 months for us. I did it very gradually and there was some travel and sickness thrown in there too that slowed it down.

Sorry I can't help much with night weaning. Mine just stopped needing it on her own. She gradually woke up fewer and fewer times at night around 16/17 months and by 18 months she was done nursing at night.

Offering a cup of water MOTN helped DS night wean. I keep the cup in his crib so he doesn't have to get me up. I did nursing as a last resort at night and offered cuddles and the water instead.
