Just counting the hours until tomorrow night. Starting to get overwhelmed with the mental checklist of house things I feel like I need to get done before listing. We're definitely going to need a storage unit and we could totally use one now, I just don't want to pay for it longer than I have to.
We are definitely going to buy a house before selling ours and move everything first. There's no way I can get everyone and the cats out of this house for showings.

This is what I'm so worried about. I have an effing zoo in my house. I'm sure the neighbors would let me toss the dogs in their yard, but then what do I do with the cats? Pack them up in carriers and drive around with a meow mix chorus.

Hahahah "meow mix chorus" - I think that's your best option

You guys decided to list your house? I thought you had said before you might try to rent it out.

Our neighbors were life savers for the few showings we had. They were cool with us bringing our dog to their house even when they were at work. I honestly don't know what we would have done otherwise. We would have had to take time off work, just to get the dog out and drive around.

We thought about that, but in the end decided not to. More trouble than it's worth and we'd like to use the equity for a bigger down payment. It could have definitely paid off in the long run, but could have also been a lot of work with an old house.
We didn't bother with our cats during showings. One is too scared to even come out from under the bed, the other is a little curious but doesn't really roam. You can always put up a sign on the door to beware of cats and not to leave the door open.

I was thinking it might sway allergic people from looking. But I guess the dander is there either way.

Our realtor recommended that we remove all traces of the dog because some people are just put-off by pets. So whenever we had a showing we also took her bowls, bed, and all the dog toys out of the house. That might be a bit extreme, but since leaving the dog is was not an option, it wasn't that big of a deal to take her stuff out too. If the cats are shy and you could leave them at home, I would probably not be as willing to do all the extra work to erase all traces of them. If someone is allergic, they can negotiate for new carpet or something.

Honestly, if I'm at a house viewing and there's cats around, it will be an instant turnoff for me. It won't be a deal breaker at all, but it will not make me jump all over putting an offer down. I do have allergies, but unless I see the cats, I may not make the connection.
I suppose if there are a lot of cats and your are severely allergic I could see that being a turnoff. But I can't imagine dragging 2 cats out of my house and the litter boxes for every showing. Trying to wrangle cats in carriers is a pita plus stressful on them. And sometimes you don't even know when you will get a showing. Like every morning I just made sure to clean up jic and a couple times we got requests in middle of the day and would have had no way to go home and drag the cats out. Guess I'm glad no one seemed to care at our place. And my realtor never said anything about it. He's a cat lover tho so maybe biased lol.

Yes all of this. So I think it will just be easier for me to move us all to a new house and then sell this one. I wouldn't do that if I thought it would take a while to sell but that shouldn't be the case. I can't imagine cleaning up after the kids every morning for a possible showing either.
DNW to drive around with the meow mix chorus and their litter boxes while pregnant.
How many do you have?
5, like I said it's a zoo. We've tried to give 2 away, but one came back twice for various reasons (too clingy, didn't get along with the other cats, etc). H is finally convinced it's too many, but now were stuck with them. GAH! Maybe I can find someone to temporarily keep some/all of them. Sorry for the word vomit.

Would a family member take some? If some of them are shy I wouldn't worry about them being in the house. If they are like my gray cat, she just hides under the bed and no one would no she's there.

We looked into doggy daycare when we listed our house. Never ended up using it, but we would have if it had gone on longer. Do they have anything like that for cats? You're likely to have a lot of showings for the first week or so and then it will die down, so maybe you could arrange to find another place for them to stay for the first week.

They would probably just stay where they are unless it was close to when we feed them. I've come home in the middle of the day before and they don't even wake up unless I'm making a bunch of noise. I'm thinking if I can temporarily re-home 2-3 and toss the dogs in the neighbor's yard it will be ok.

This was my plan, but once we made the offer on the new house I got nervous. It also had a lot to do with the time of year. I was actually really surprised that we got approved for both mortgages, because I certainly don't feel like we have that much extra money each month. But it's because for the pre-approval, the bank only looks at your debts that impact your credit report. So our monthly DC tuition wasn't a factor, which is a huge part of our monthly expenses.
