Ugh - we have to start solids. Baby's four month appointment was today. I just don't want to for weird reasons that are mostly due to me feeling overwhelmed by adding another layer to my daily life.
But, pediatrician is all in - let her taste anything and everything aside from honey and other milks (so she doesn't come to prefer that over formula yet). Peanuts, seafood, eggs - just dooooo it. And do it sooner rather than later.
We started today. I wasn't ready. But I roasted up some sweet potatoes and lovingly gave them to the girl. She looked at me like I was insane, but she didn't spit tuem out. So, win?

H and I will give DS a taste of whatever we are eating at meals. He does get purees too, but no need to make more work. We gave him a few green beans and a chunk of turkey that he could grab from Christmas dinner. Before he was grabbing foods, we would hold a piece of food for him to suck on, but not eat. He really enjoys it and now he grabs at our plates whenever he can.

Re: peanut butter (and sun butter, and almond butter, and whatever the like) - I mix with a thin purée. With DD2 it was acorn squash. She loooooved it, even though it was no sugar, salt, or oil added stuff that was actually kind of gross.
For peanut butter are you guys using all natural or Jiffy? Just curious.
I'll probably use all natural/organic so that it doesn't have all the sugar in it. I think Jiffy actually has one with less or no sugar. (I don't think it's a huge deal if you just use what you have since it'll be a very small amount, we just tend to buy the one without sugar anyways).

I worry less about added sugars in nut butter than added salt. Compared to a banana it's not much still. Trader Joe's sells PB whose only ingredient is peanuts. I use that bit oof...added oil really helps the texture of PB.

joy you still have time. We're just shy of 6 months and haven't started yet. Going to probably this week but don't rush it if you don't want to at the 4 month mark!
gratefulgirl, at the Whole Foods near me there is a machine where you grind peanuts into PB so no worry about added sugar, oil or other ingredients you don't want your children ingesting.
The pediatrician gave us the green light to start solids at his 4 month appointment last week. He's miserable now from teething so I'll wait until he is less irritable.

I've had a hard time finding applesauce that only has apples and water, seems like most of them have preservatives, too. I've been thinking I might just cook some and blend it up

It's SO easy and good! My kid was like ewwww to apples, so I ate the rest

Today when we were at the pedi for the pink eye, I asked about feeding solids vs the bottles, and how he has been spitting up a ton. She told us to go ahead and try to give a bit more solids (he is absolutely in love), and we can lower the amount of formula a tad. He always always finishes his bottles, so perhaps he didn't know he was full and then just kept eating and spit it all back up. I may even try 2 meals a day.
Anyway, we are using purees and so far he has liked everything he has tried. He gave horrifying looks the first time with pears, but liked them the next day.

I don't know why I'm dragging my feet on the whole solids thing. I've just read SO MANY conflicting opinions that I think I got too confused and just decided to deal with all that later. Can a BTDT mom just tell me if this very loose plan is ok? DS will be 5 months on Friday (what?!).
I want to start with avocado. Will puree it with some breastmilk until it's pretty thinned out. Stick with just this food (how much, 1 tbs max?) for 3-4 days before introducing a new food. I think after the avocado I'll do sweet potatoes, then maybe carrots? Not sure.
Just offer once per day to start, after nursing (how do I know when to start offering 2x per day, or when to offer more than 1tbs?)
How do I know when to change to a slightly thicker consistency?

My kids were good with thick pretty quickly. YMMV. DD's1 & 3 liked solids 1 hour after nursing. DD2 did solids immediately after nursing. Both are fine.
I offer until they are full because BM came first. Once they eat more than 3 T. at dinner I add breakfast, then lunch. I introduce whatever is convenient, trying to cover all food groups. If my kid hates something I do not stress and keep offering it mixed with something else.
