hummingbird125 Avocado is great because you can just mush it with a spoon and add milk to it. I would try about a teaspoon altogether at once. I do one feeding of solids a day in the evening when the rest of the family eats dinner.
So far, I have done avocado, then quinoa cereal, and then sweet potato. He seems to be doing better with feeding and being messy...I think when you start seeing those signs, it can be a little thicker.

I give a new food for 2 days before trying a different one. We also do not have a lot of food allergies in the family. I was more serious about 3 days with ds1.
As far as thickness, if they are choking it's probably too thick. We gradually worked up to a bit thicker.
If DD is gagging, does that mean the purée is too thick?
Also, do you do 4 days for each new food for every food? I feel like it's going to take forever to introduce every different food/spice at this rate.
Gagging is normal at this age bc their gag reflex is closer to the front of their mouths. It's a great protective response bc they'll gag before they choke.
I never did the 4 day rule. I only did one meal a day so figured I'd see a reaction sooner.

Am I supposed to have benadryl on hand when I introduce food? Or is that just for allergy foods. Was planning to start with sweet potatoes.
My pediatrician told me to have benadryl on hand before starting anything.
...but now I realize the bottle doesn't list a dosage for children under 2 years. Does anyone know what dosage I would give for a reaction?
Yeah, my doctor never mentioned it. It was something I didn't think of until I was about to feed her. We have it now, but no idea on dosage.
We went with sweet potatoes and she was not a fan. She ate very little and made the funniest faces.
For those feeding around dinner, how are you doing your eating schedule? I typically nurse her at 6 and then we eat dinner. I offered the food when we were done eating. It seems like she's probably not hungry, but if I do it later it cuts close to 8pm when I get her settled for bed. Thoughts?

Oh man, I'm just jealous that you get to eat dinner before your kid goes to bed.

Haha, oh goodness. I'm sure its very different with 2 babies!! I feel like we got really lucky with this kid. I nurse her and she hangs out in her high chair with some toys while we eat. She's really chill.

I gave O her first food yesterday. She did so well sitting in the high chair, and she went after the spoon so much I had to swat her arms away over and over lol. She loved sweet potatoes.
It's funny because we spent 6 months stressing to big sister that babies can't have any food to keep her from attempting to share her snacks. She was amazed to see the baby eating!
Hmm, there are no food allergies in my family, I may shorten the time frame for foods less likely to be allergens. I think I lean more toward BLW but my rule following side is making me test each food individually.
I'm not really liking the purée stage, it will be nice when she can just eat bits of what we are eating.
remylove1011 with my DD I used to do dinner at 5/5:30. But she also used to go to bed at 6:30. I will be doing the same with DS since that's what time DD and I eat. I'm lucky though that I'm home by 4:30 so that time is feasible.

I only did puréed foods for a short time then discovered BLW. I found BLW so much easier.

I can't handle the idea of BLW. Too many variables. I'm definitely doing one food at a time for 3-4 days and I'm making all the purees so I can control exactly what goes in their mouths.

So I had originally planned to make my own baby food, but I think I'm not going to do that. I bought the sweet potatoes she tried to see the texture and it seems so much easier. I don't have a food processor so I'd have to buy one and to buy those little ice cube trays. I think finding the time to do it is the big thing. I already feel like I don't have enough time in my day and it's just going to stress me out.
Those who are not making their own food. What brands do you use/like?

I still will make everything she gets. I have to make all my food from scratch anyway because of all my dietary restrictions. I am just finding spoon feeding frustrating.
BLW terrifies me. Someone educated me- How doesn't the baby choke?
My DH has choked a few times, 2 were bad enough that I had to do the Heimlich and save him.... maybe I'm just crazy paranoid now?
Quick version: Use super large pieces of food that they can't fit it all in their mouths
Until closer to a year the gag reflux is closer to the front of the mouth, so they'll gag before actually choking
Very close supervision
Also bought the book and was comfortable with the concept before trying.
I did it with DD and never had an issue. She didn't really "eat" the food until older just tasted the foods. It's not for everyone but worked for me. And I found meal time to be much easier. She ate what we ate..except for overly salty foods or processed foods.
Yeah I'm afraid of choking and potential allergies make me nervous, hence why we are doing purées, one food at a time. If it wasn't for those concerns I would love to just give her some pieces of what we are eating and let her gnaw on them.
My pediatrician says that I don't have to wait days in between introducing new foods, to start with tastes for now (no need for full bowls of solids or anything), and to give her anything and everything.
I feel like everyone has been given differing information from each other. Reading this thread is interesting.
bocaburger, - my baby is 13 lbs, 11 oz and I was told to give her 6.25 mg of liquid benadryl (every six hours, as needed).
Confession- It's been a rough day, I just fed my baby gogo squeeze apple sauce from a pouch on a spoon. He seemed to really like it- even though he gagged at the apple sauce I made him last time that little jerk.

Hahahaha! Maybe he'll like it if you try again? Does gogo have sugar or something? Can't see why he would like that over homemade!

So we did night 2 of sweet potatoes today and it was way more successful. She actually ate and was trying to make me go faster by taking the spoon. We made a big mess and she made some great faces!
