Hi ladies. Mostly a lurker here and coming to ask for advice. This board is always so helpful. Baby girl is a month old. At pedi appt Friday he identified her diaper rash as a fungal one caused by yeast. She is EBF. No white spots or film in her mouth. Prescribed nystatin cream and rash is clearing already after only a few applications.
I am wondering if we have a very mild case of thrush. My only symptom would be some breast pain that is intermittent. Ranges from dull/achy to sharp. Nipple area not shiny/pink.
Like PP said, the rash doesn't have to mean thrush. If the pain is really intermittent I probably would lean away from thinking thrush. But it never hurts to ask the doctor
You can have thrush with little or no symptoms, LO can have it and you don't, or you have it and LO doesn't or doesn't have symptoms. I've been through all scenarios!
When I battled thrush, what finally killed it for me was taking probiotics daily (I actually took a stronger dose for a week or two to get rid of it initially, but I had a pretty bad case, had already taken one round of diflucan, and been treating with all kinds of creams, ointments, washes, etc. -- it just kept coming back). I have friends who swear by giving their babies probiotics for recurrent yeast-related diaper rashes. It is usually sold in powder form for infants, and can be mixed with liquid (breastmilk/formula or a small amount of water).
The other thing you can use in lieu of prescription nystatin is OTC lotrimin cream (it's an antifungal, often in the aisle with foot care stuff) or OTC monistat (what is used to treat vaginal yeast infections). I apply a small amount of one of those and then put regular diaper cream over it. Clears the rash right away or within a day or two if it's particularly bad!
This is probably more info than you needed, but for anyone else lurking and wondering about thrush or yeast rashes, that's my experience.
