I just had to get stitches and they prescribed me hydrocodone. Can I take this while breastfeeding? My son is 16 months old.
ThAts what my OB rx after delivery with both my kids and they said it was safe while breastfeeding.
Thank you. They said it was safe but don't take it unless I absolutely have too so I felt like I should check (dh is asking the pharmacy when he gets it too).
it should be fine short-term (infants are prescribed similar painkillers after surgery). infantrisk (the premier researchers on BFing/medications) says don't exceed 30-40mg of hydrocodone in 24 hours. you can also try to time it so you avoid BFing during the first 2-4 hours after you take a dose-- then the concentration in your milk will be lower.
but yeah, see if you feel like you need it-- you can try taking 3 advil and see if that takes the edge off.
