Anyone claimed IVF or fertility treatment on taxes yet?

We have an appointment with our tax person for next week.  Just wondering if it'll be a smooth process or what to expect.

You can itemize all medical expenses greater than 10% of your AGI (not just IVF). Just make sure you have receipts or itemized statements for everything. Prescriptions, mileage to/from clinic, everything.

We filed ours yesterday. I created an excel document with all treatment dates, blood draws, prescription dates, and travel dates (since my RE is out of town for me). I then compared all of our receipts and put down the amount paid for everything. But I'm crazy, so no need to do all of this.

I separated by:

- Costs for each test or procedure or doctor visits (fluid sonogram, IVF, ultrasounds, doctor visit co pays, NT scan, etc)
- blood draws (pre-treatment blood draws, betas, other blood draws once pregnant, etc)
- prescriptions (each prescription and date it was filled/refilled + copay)
- travel expenses (either mileage for cars or flight costs)

I was able to get a print out from my RE for all expenses paid through them for the year and also a print out from all of the pharmacies we used (specialty pharmacy + Walgreens) and this helped a ton. I also keep every receipt, so we had a ton of things to go through. You need to keep receipts in case of an audit, and we brought them "just in case" but you can just realistically add everything up. So you know what your total was.

Also, just a note, I was a bit disappointed by the percentage we got back for our above 10% expenses, so just be aware it's not everything. GL and happy tax filing to everyone!

This. Our CPA just finished ours and it was no problem. I had everything saved in an excel spreadsheet and kept the receipts and invoices for all procedures, dr visits, and prescriptions. You'll only be able to claim a % of what you spend over 10% of your AGI, but every dollar helps! Also, since our ER/ETs were out of town, you can also claim lodging expenses if you had any.

And like IFinTN said, it's all medical/dental expenses, not just IF costs.

Thanks for the info! I'm a teacher and our insurance, pre-IF, is the shit. So I've never had to worry about it before. :/ I'm bummed to hear that it doesn't sound like much of a refund. Dh and I have really been hoping to get a little back this year to help pad the emergency fund.

We are in the process of this. I kept track of all my monitoring appointments to claim gas + tolls, saved all co-pay receipts from Freedom Fertility, got a printout from the local pharmacy of all our prescriptions.
Hopefully we will get something out of it.

And a reminder to any third party folks, your donor agency fees, donor fees, costs for DS, etc, are all also deductible.

I'm a CPA. The process SHOULD be relatively easy. The only hiccup is if the total expenses don't exceed the 10% of your AGI that everyone else mentioned. Best of luck!
