Plugged duct question

This may be a dumb question... but how will I know when a plugged duct works its way out? Is there some kind of "chunk" that will pass? (I'm envisioning something like a kidney stone needing to pass..?) Or is the plug more of a kink in the plumbing rather than an actual "plug"?
