Anyone else has a super grunting baby? L seems to have Grunting Baby Syndrome (yep, it's a real thing) and grunts all day long, being worst at night. He sometimes latches and then grunts and squirms with my breasts still latched. I break the latch, which pisses him off, but it's getting to be super frustrating. The doctor doesn't want me to let him try nursing for longer than 30 minutes. That's great but 15 of those is spent in grunts and contortions. I was going to offer some gripe water but the pedi said not to bother. It is more about immature bodies than gas.
I've tried burping him, placing him belly down on me, nothing works...
Anyone else has or have in the past had a grunting baby? Any tips?

Is it possible he has reflux? DS had bad reflux and spent a lot of his time at the breast grunting and arching his back.
As far as the nighttime grunting, I started off by moving the bassinet across the room. When it was still keeping me up, I put him in his crib at about 2-3 weeks old. I felt horrible, but those grunts were SO loud. I wasn't sleeping at all. We had a snuza monitor, so that put my mind at ease.

This was basically us. N had bad reflux and was a super grunter. I moved him to his room at 6 weeks because he was so loud.

I asked the pedi about reflux but he doesn't think he has it. He says babies with reflux tend to struggle to gain weight and L gains weight easily. I want to get a second opinion though.

Honestly, it can go both ways. N gained 3 lb his first month - he over ate to stop the burning.

I'd definitely get a second opinion. I never hurts. DS had no issues gaining weight. In fact, he was the opposite and wanted to basically nurse all day. Before being medicated, he nursed 18 times one day. Pedi said in some babies the milk soothes the burning. Much like me and my milkshakes lately, ha!
Also, DS had silent reflux, which means he rarely spit up because he would spit up and then quickly swallow it (burns coming up and going back down). I had to look really carefully because I didn't know typical newborn behavior that well as a new mom. I found a checklist online and realized DS was showing most of the symptoms of silent reflux.
I'd maybe think about a 2nd opinion on the reflux too. My DD had it really bad and she was a stellar weight gainer. Like rinny's LO, she just overate to stop the burning.

So I had to get to my computer to reply- E grunts quite a bit. Mostly when she is trying to make a bowel movement. We see very little spit up so I kind of doubt it's reflux, but you never know. The pediatrician and the NICU doctors all said it was something she would out grow and is normal for a preemie. I really hope she out grows it, and soon because H and I would like to be able to stop taking shifts. H is a light sleeper and her grunting would be hard for H to deal with. I feel it's too soon to put her in the crib in her room yet.

Yes!!! Noah is super grunty too, to the point where we had a hard time sleeping with him in our room until we figured out what was grunting and what was him actually awake and needing something. I was also told it's completely normal with preemies and it should go away eventually. We've just gotten used to it at this point, but it's kind of embarrassing when he's grunting and growling in public. I swear people wonder if we have a baby or a small animal!!
