How old is baby? 5 months How's it going? Really well.
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? I think we are. I keep waiting for something to happen that will kill my supply but so far nothing.
Have you returned to work yet if you are that is? I have been back to work for a few months. The hardest part is that no matter how much I tell daycare she doesn't need 5 oz of milk they insist she does. I don't want her to be unhappy so I am working hard to get the 5 ozs for each bottle. I can do it but it takes awhile. I also have about 800 ozs of frozen milk from my earlier EPing days. I am trying to donate it but have yet to find a taker.
So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? No one has asked about solids. That is except my dh. He took DD to her 4 month appt and the dr said we could watch DD's cues to see if she wanted to start solids. Now every time she tries to eat something in my hands he mentions how much she would like food. I am making baby food this week since I am off from work. Since she is 5 and a half months I might give her a taste of avocado. About half of the time she is STTN, so I just go with that.
I would run the check-in but I am not fastidious enough about checking the board while I am working.
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? For the most part. DS has lingering congestion and cough from RSV that I think is affecting his latch.
Have you returned to work yet if you are that is? Yep, I went back at the very end of January.
So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? I get the STTN question all.the.time. What's funny is that he WAS STTN until he got sick 2 weeks ago. Now he's up every 1-3 hours.
How old is baby? almost 5 months How's it going? really well
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? yes, except I am sick today and concerned about how it will effect my supply (planning to start another post about this) Have you returned to work yet if you are that is? Yes, went back beginning of January (3.5 months) She transitioned well. While I dislike pumping, she is taking a bottle very well
So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? maybe once or twice on STTN, no one has asked about solids What do you tell them? sometimes. Some nights she sleeps straight through, others its one wake up, and still other times she is up 2-3 times.

3 mos to 6 mos check in
How old is baby? A little over 5 months How's it going? We're really starting to get into a groove!
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? For the most part, I think we are. She was born a little early, was tiny, jaundiced, took forever to regain birth weight. We were feeding every 90 minutes or more, round the clock til almost 3 months. Thankfully, she was healthy, just small. But anything compared to those first months feels like smooth sailing! Have you returned to work yet if you are that is? Yep. I took 12 weeks, and have been back since Dec 1. So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? What do you tell them?
The STTN question seems like a reflex for people. "Hi, how are you? How's the baby? Is she sleeping through the night yet?" I couldn't even count how many times I've been asked. She sleeps pretty well for the most part. Drom about 7:45pm to 6:15am, she typically wakes up once or twice to eat. Every once in a while, she'll go the whole stretch; and other times, we have a night like last night when she's up 3 or 4 times (but that was our fault for being too busy this weekend and not being very good with her nap/feeding schedule.
MIL of course says we should add rice cereal to her nighttime bottle. UGH.
We did start with a few spoonsful of purees this past week. Carrots and peas have both been a hit. Her day care lady is really pushing to get her eating "real food."
How old is baby? 4.5 months How's it going? Pretty well. I had some really bad damage on one of my nipples because it is short and DS had trouble latching correctly. It took a lot of APNO and tlc, but now it is healed and looks like a normal nipple. It's still a little sensitive, but manageable.
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? Nursing is going very well. DS has always been a very enthusiastic nurser. He takes a bottle but doesn't love it. I've been consistently pumping more at work than he eats at daycare. Our main struggle has been sleep. Before I returned to work, he almost always only woke up once each night. Now he is up 1-3 times. I'm not sure if it is 4 month sleep regression, the series of colds he's gotten from daycare, or if he is reverse cycling.
Have you returned to work yet if you are that is? I started back on Jan 5
So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? Sttn: by every single person I talk to. Solids: mostly just our immediate families
What do you tell them? For solids, I just say that our pedi said to wait until around 6 months. I haven't gotten much argument.
For Sttn I hate being asked. I try to be vague so as not to invite a lot of advice. "Not quite" or "some nights are better than others." For some reason, everyone tells me to have DH give a bottle MOTN, even people who know I bf. It drives me nuts because I don't feel like discussing my bf supply and engorgement with everyone, so I just smile and nod.

3 mos to 6 mos check in
How old is baby? She'll be 4 months next week
How's it going? Pretty well!
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? Most days, yes. We have our off days, and she spits up quite a bit. But that varies by day too. I can't seem to pinpoint what in my diet does it to her.
Have you returned to work yet if you are that is? Yep. I went back Jan. 5. Pumping is going well so far!
So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? Not terribly often. Mostly just family. It doesn't really bother me.
What do you tell them? She's been STTN the majority of the time since she was 8 weeks old. She sometimes wakes up once, eats, and goes back to sleep. About the solids I say sometime between 4 & 6 months. Preferably closer to 6.
How old is baby? 5 months How's it going? Pretty good, my supply is great. She has never really been a comfort nurser until recently. If I come home from work, she wants to nurse immediately even if she just had a bottle. Kind of makes me feel good!
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? Pretty much, I wish she would wake up less at night. Waking up 4 times a night still is really taking its toll on me.
Have you returned to work yet if you are that is? Been back since November
So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? What do you tell them? Really haven't been asked about STTN. If they do I just laugh, lol.
Solids yes. We have started, only because she was showing all signs. Snatching food from our hands, diving for spoons. She grabbed my banana the other day and got angry when I took it away!

3 mos to 6 mos check in
How old is baby? 5 months old How's it going? Things are going well. DS wakes often at night so I'm super sleep deprived but I know this will pass eventually.
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? I think so. We have our routine down for BF. Pumping has started to get easier as well. Although some days I don't pump enough to keep up with him. He eats 5 oz bottles while with MIL ( which I know is a lot but he isn't content with less. And we have done paced feeding, slower nipples, etc. all of it we have tried.). I pump 15-20 oz at work and that's just enough to cover what he eats.
Have you returned to work yet if you are that is? Returned to work 12/1
So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? What do you tell them? My kid has never STTN so I just laugh when they ask. I hate hearing them say I should just wean him and give him formula so he will sleep longer. I do not plan on doing that at all, he loves to nurse and I can provide that for him so I will.
We have started solids just because he was showing all the signs to be ready. We are introducing things slowly. But he loves it. And is much happier with being able to try new things.

How old is baby?
4.5 months old
How's it going?
Great! After a slow start with weight gain, she is growing faster than her sister did, and weighed a full pound more at her 4 month appt (13 lb, still not huge, but genetically expected).
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? Pretty much. Except for some overfeeding of bottles by daycare and the accompanying trouble keeping up with pumping amounts. I pretty much can keep up, but then I'm engorged all weekend - suggesting that they are overfeeding her a bit. (No, it does not help her sttn).
Have you returned to work yet if you are that is?
Yes. I've been back since 1/5. I've surprised myself by using only the manual pump at work and rarely turning on the double electric.
So how many times have you been asked when you are starting solids and if baby is sttn? What do you tell them?
I don't get the chance to talk about my baby much (except on here, and those women know better than to ask those questions), so it hasn't come up much. But DH and I have discussed implementing some form of sleep training (along the lines of no cry sleep solution) if her sleep does not improve on its own between now and 6 months.
Solids will be BLW-style. She isn't showing signs of readiness or interest yet.

Oh my youngest son was the world's worst at waking at 4am and deciding it was time to get up for the day.

I would be pissed that daycare isn't listening about 5 oz bottles. They may need some info about how much milk a breastfed baby needs.
I would definitely be sending from my frozen stash and try not to go nutso with pumping to satisfy daycare. Of course, never tell them you have extra in the freezer, or daycare will probably push for 6 oz bottles soon.
You can tell your dh that when they start following your hand when you are eating that they are usually just totally interested in the spoon. lol! Give yourself a little more time by giving baby a baby safe baby spoon to play with. And then as the weather warms up, you can offer frozen breastmilk in slushy form as the first solids.

Yeah for the bold that is a lot at once. Usually when they take in that much at daycare/babysitter they sleep a bit more at night. Are you SURE that's a slow flow bottle nipple? does milk come out when you hold it upside down, or milk come out in a strong fast big spray when you squeeze the bottle nipple? There also needs to be a LOT of effort to try other ways to sooth baby than more food.
I know that sounds like a no-brainer and that of course your MIL is doing just that--but my mom was the best babysitter, but every time they made a peep the first thing that she did was offer a bottle or sipper cup (mine hated bottles) and it was always a large amount stemming from her experience with formula feeding--my baby brother was taking 8 oz bottles the day he left the hospital. It has always been her love language to feed people, esp babies and kids.

Nope. I suck at commitment.
You do NOT suck at committment. You've been committed to helping other moms with breastfeeding problems and committed to breastfeeding your babies as long as I've known you!
I think I may be the only one to have volunteered. If there are no other takers I will go ahead and to the check-ins. Say once a week on Mondays?
Sure if you want to start it every monday for now would be easier to remember. If there isn't much interest in once a week, make it as often as you need to keep things interesting. thanks

I'm not so good about that kind of stuff either. But helping other new moms continuously like you do is still a form of commitment. Just not maybe scheduled commitment lol

Did you have a question or comment in there somewhere? I accidentally posted a blank quote like this yesterday to someone else so just wondering

Yea I had a reply typed out and everything....weird I thought it posted.
But we are using slow flow nipples. And I have talked to MIL a lot about his feedings. I will say that he is a big boy (95th percentile for height) but he's not fat (50th percentile for weight). Se times I think he is nursing at night for comfort since I'm back at work. But again he wakes often during the weekends too. It's hard knowing what the right thing to do is. And obviously if he's hungry, I want him to eat. Luckily I am able to pump as much as I do, but there is just no extra freezer stash in our house which I wish we had!

How old is baby? 5 months on monday How's it going? Pretty well. It's taken almost 6 weeks but I've finally gotten the hang of being back at work and having a baby.
Are you at the point of smooth sailing? I'm afraid to say yes but I think so. V eats 4 7oz bottles at daycare. I started with 4oz and they said she would finish eating and then cry hysterically until she was given more. At 7 she apparently is happier. She eats a little less in the afternoons and I'm gone for 10 hours plus. It's is pretty tough to keep up but I pump once motn, 3x at work and once before bed.
How many times about sotn and solids? All the time sotn but that one doesn't bother me. We usually have one wakeup and every blue moon she sleeps the whole time. Solids are another story. I have actually had to have words with one of the girls at my daycare. After my verbally saying no to cereal she started putting that it was a needed supply on her sheet they give you at the end of the day and posting it by her name on the wall. When I confronted her she argued with me and then said if I'm not giving cereal I should supplement formula! Wtf! I work hard to make that milk. Just feed it to her and stop telling me what to do with my child.

Holy cow, she's eating 28oz at daycare? That's as much as she's supposed to need all day. Have you tried talking to them about paced feeding? Although it doesn't sound like they are very bf friendly. The cereal/ formula comments would piss me off also.

In you have a very very unfriendly to breastfeeding daycare! I would be looking for down where else to take you baby if at al possible!
28 oz at daycare is a full days feedings of breastmilk. 7 oz bottles are on the large size for formula fed babies at this age not just way way way overkill for breastfed babies. Babies under six months commonly don't eat any cereal and it's often just done at home you know by the parents bit at daycare. So many things ding my they are control freaks radar here. Get a different caregiver if at all possible and don't let regent keep overfeeding your baby

This feels like an appropriate place to bring this up... I'm in a situation similar to doglover31 and vavavictoria.
When starting daycare at 3 months, I sent my LO with assuming she'd take four 4-oz bottles, and sent a fifth 4-oz bottle, "just in case." Day care fed her a bottle at 8, 10, noon, 2 and 4. I nursed at 6a and 6p. So, we were apart for 12 hours, and she had 20 oz in that time. That's 1.66 oz per hour, compared to the 1-1.5 Kellymom recommendation.
Since DC was feeding her every 2 hours, I tried sending five 3.5 ounce bottles, so 17.5 oz total, or 1.5 oz per hour apart. But DC asked us to please send 4-oz bottles, that LO still seemed hungry. So, I emailed my doctor, worried that we were overfeeding. Ped said with LO being 25%-ish for height and weight, she was not concerned with over feeding.
Over the past several weeks, I've been eeking back on the bottles to about five 3.75 ounces each. And will eek back a little more to 3.5.
DC has been pushing "real" food - and though we tried some, we take about 3 days to finish a 2 ounce package. If we send the purees, we're sure DC will give her the whole thing. Husband does drop off and pick up and feels "pressured" because day care lady has much more experience with babies than we do as first time parents. We're going to send an email to our ped tonight asking for more concrete advice on how much milk / solids to send.
Additional information: Now she's five months old. Nurses when we get home around 6 or 6:30, a few bites of puree 45 mins to an hour later. And top her off as she falls asleep. Sometimes wakes up once in the MOTN to nurse. Then nurses again at 6am. If her MOTN feeding is after 4am though, she often refuses to eat at 6am.
Are we over-feeding? 18.75 ounces (five 3.75-oz bottles); two or three regular nursing sessions, one pre-bed top-off. And a few bites of peas.
It doesn't sound like overfeeding since If the other 2-3 feeds are around 3 oz that's 18+6-9 oz. That's in a good range. There is some variation and if baby is happy and thriving that's a good indicator even if amt is a bit higher or lower.
Now don't fall into the trap of thinking your pediatrician is an expert on how much your baby needs to eat in breastmilk or solids. so much of the research on feeding babies is with formula fed babies anyway. Use your mommy instinct. It's valid here. Even ftms and dad's know their own baby better than anyone else does. Of course dr can give some ideas on when to start solids but often their advice about solids sucks unless they've been thru it with their own baby lol

Guilty. We are so, so guilty of this! Our pediatrician is awesome, and we love her, and she is so laid back, and "go with your gut" about most things. But, she is pregnant with her first. That makes me feel good, because it makes me think that everything she practices about babies, she is now considering from an "almost-mom" perspective. But she hasn't breastfed a baby yet. So in that case, I guess my husband and I are better qualified to understand LO's cues.
But back to the "overfeeding" question. Are there any signs to look for that would indicate an over-fed baby?
