Blood in breastmilk?

So.. I have been EBF my DD for 6 months.. pumping during the day since I went back to work at the end of November. I was pumping just a little bit ago and looked down at the very end and noticed a small amount of blood in the last few drops on the right side. Freaked me out! But I took the pump off and I can't even tell where it was coming from..?? My nipple was not cracked at all and there was no obvious "spot" it was coming from. Very strange. I have two thoughts.. 1) I had what I think was a small surface bleb last week.. maybe it turned into a bleb that "burst"? (Does that happen?) or 2) I've been plagued with a recurring plugged duct / mastitis on that same side.. Could it have been that working itself out? Anyone else ever have this happen?

nipple blebs are usually just pores on the nipple that are clogged with hardened milk... so it seems unlikely that that would bleed, especially if you didn't see any open wounds on your breasts afterwards.

mastitis can definitely cause blood/pus/mucus in your milk. it is still safe for LO to consume, although of course you can discard if you want.

are you sure that you're on the mend, though? were you given antibiotics for the mastitis? if you haven't been on antibiotics you might want to give your doctor a call and get their opinion wrt the blood.

With DS1 I had this happen, but during a nursing session. He bit me hard and I didn't realize it cut me. I looked down to see my tiny vampire nursing with pink milk streaming down his face!

It's totally safe, no reason to dump it!
