40+5
Contractions started on Thursday morning at about 7, low cramps but totally manageable. Told my partner and got loads of silly questions about timings and how long until we have baby. He couldn’t understand that they were random and might just idle for hours bless him.
Spoke to my mum (who’s birthday was that day) and explained what was happening. She offered to come and collect us and bring us to hers so I could get looked after and fed a good meal before she thought I would drop baby at 7pm.
So I spent the day ignoring the twinges and enjoyed a steak and chips. Contractions got stronger while at the table so my Mum urged me to alert the home birth team. I left a message and got a call back at 5: 40 to say that a home birth as planned was off as one of the midwifes for that night had called in sick. If I lasted until 8am I could but best bet was to call the hospital . Pain from contractions now included my back. Timing them had them at 4-5 mins apart for 40/50 seconds.
We get home and I crashed in bed to try and rest and ride it out, 9.40pm no good could not find a position that help, my partner then put his foot down and called my parents so they could come watch DS and drop us at the hospital. I was worried I'd have a repeat of my last labour and get sent home again. He then called Labour and delivery and after the million questions had the go ahead to come in.
We get to L&D about 10:30, got wheeled in and my partner is rubbish steering them. In my room I was processed, explain why a home birth had come in and what was needed once baby was born re: blood antibodies, offered gas and air didn’t like it. Obs for me taken and then I was offered a pool room. Just had to have my cervix checks (x2 as I had a student midwife in with me) and be above 5 (was 7-8 woo hoo) and once they had listened to baby’s heart I could go in the pool.
Only thing was at this point there was no let up in contractions and a feeling of pressure with a need to POP so moving in to positions to be checked was not good and I was curled up in pain. When I sat to try and move off the bed to the pool room the waters popped and I needed to push. One hairy wheel chair ride to the room, 3 steps in to the pool, no more than 2 contractions and my baby boy was out in the bottom of the pool to be scooped into my arms. Honestly it was so surreal to pull him up towards me. 23:41 just in time to share a birthday.
I didn’t need any stiches and had next to no blood loss. We had to stay in as they wanted to have the blood results from his cord blood back and reviewed by the pedi. Mostly looking at bilirubin as the antibodies I had could cause that in baby.
All came back fine and now we are trying to find a normal in the chaos.
