I'm just curious, as we have a range of ages and regions represented here - was 1984 required reading for you in school (as in you read it and discussed it in a class)? (Clicky poll, may have to scroll up and/or use a different platform to see it)
Eta when I was trying to post this last night i just got error messages - so am surprised it actually posted! Sorry about the typo/autocorrect fail (CV was supposed to be 'or college' or something like that) in the poll question - it is now not letting me edit that part.
I had to read it in college for a class called the Political Novel. I wouldn't have had to read it in a gen ed class though. I'm pretty libertarian so I think everyone should have to read it at some point.

springbeduk, Animal Farm is another really important one. I actually first read that in 7th grade and then again in either high school or college. I can't remember. Another great one along those lines is the Handmaid's Tale.

yes, I read handmaid's tale, too - multiple times, I think, in middle school and high school. Don't think it was for a class ever - just read it.
Definitely worthwhile if anyone hasn't read it yet!
I read it on my own in high school. It was a really compelling read. It was a little slow on the upstart for me but once the world building made more sense I really enjoyed it.
