cabbagecabbage that's how I'm feeling too. I suppose I could see him just going by Jasper and not having a nickname, but I also don't want to dislike a nickname that people might call him by.
My DD is Evangeline and everyone thought we were going to give her a nickname. We didn't and people just followed our lead. I would not let the chance of someone maybe giving a nickname I did not like keep me from using a name I loved.

PirateCat, I'm really late, but I would think part of the reason for Sebastian's popularity is how well it works in other languages. Obviously, a truly international name is hard to find; but, it's one that works in South America, North America, and most of Europe.
