Ok so I have a crawler at 6 months! Insane. So now I have to babyproof but I am totally clueless about how to do that. We also live in a 440 Sq ft apartment so there's not really anywhere to move stuff out of the way. I'm considering hiring a professional but we're broke so I'd like to avoid it if possible.
Also we have hardwood floors and no rugs or carpet. G has already rolled over and smacked her head on the floor. We have been putting down blankets but she always manages to get off them. We bought one of those foam alphabet mats but then read things about EVA foam being bad... but can't find a nontoxic play mat for less than $100. So now we are thinking about a rug, but need a small one that is soft enough for crawlers. Recommendations welcome.
Also taking recommendations for playpens/gates that are big enough to contain 2 babies but fold and don't take up too much space when put away.
So basically, fix my life. And also, pray H gets a good job so we can afford a bigger place soon!!!

Ds1 was also an early crawler! We didn't worry a while lot about certain things. All breakables moved, cords stashed. Outlets with the plug covers, cabinet latches. Keep doors closed if you don't want them going in a certain room (bathroom?). If you have a coffee or end table, they make little soft caps you can put on corners. Make sure to anchor your TV or large furniture someway if you can in an apartment.
With the floors - it's a relatively short period of time that they don't have full control of the roll. I wouldn't worry too much about this. The foam could work, but they will likely crawl it soon enough. I think the foam is only an issue of they really ingest it - although I'm not too picky when it comes to organic, etc.
bocaburger don't hire anyone. Basically cover outlets and do cabinet locks for under sink and any other cabinets you want off limits. And block steps or areas that are off limits. Then I did a let DD show me other problem areas. I put corner bummers around sharp edges.
We also have wood floors and she is off the rug in no time. She has already figured out how to let her head down softly while rolling. Now she sometimes face plants while crawling. I try to stay nearby to keep an eye on her, but I also know she will have it all figured out soon. I wouldn't worry about the floors too much.

I live in a split level - there are a few steps going up, round a corner, and a few steps going down. Plus, there's an iron railing thing in between, no wall. I'm wondering if I'll have to have someone install a baby gate for that special set up. Anyone else have non traditional stairs?

It our townhouse we did. We bought a gate that curved and drilled to walls. For no wall or actually rail I'd google non traditional baby gates. There's other ways to do gates that are still safe.
Just on this subject please, please everyone anchor your furniture and tv's to the walls.
Yes! Ds1 was not a huge climber. But, a couple weeks ago he told us he shut off his sound machine, which is on top of a bookshelf about 4.5 feet high. Me: "umm how did you do that?" "I climbed up the shelves mommy!" So happy everything is anchored!
