The Dr's decided to induce me at 38 weeks due to my high blood pressure. I had been on bedrest rest for a little over a week. Being on bedrest got my blood pressure down, but the Dr's were concerned it would come back at anytime and I would develop preeclampsia. Apparently based on what my BP was at its highest, the current guidelines say to have the baby at 37 weeks, but they let me continue on bedrest because my BP went down and I wanted to continue to wait it out.
With my first, I was induced at 41+5 and really wanted to have the chance to go into labor on my own. So given that I was being induced at 38 weeks, almost 4 weeks earlier than with my first, I was a little worried that my induction would take forever and may end up with a c-section because I never progressed. None of the Dr's or nurses seemed worried, so I tried to keep that in mind.
I got to the hospital for my scheduled induction at 6:00am. They started the pitocin around 7:00. According to the monitors I was contracting, but I wasn't feeling them at all. The Dr came in around 9:30 and I was 2-3cm so she broke my water. After breaking my water, I was assuming I would start feeling the contractions, but it took another few hours before I started feeling them. I started feeling them very gradually starting out as mild cramps and then over a couple of hours Thur got increasingly uncomfortable. During this time, I was checked a few time and was gradually dilating. The numbers weren't changing all that much, but my nurse was very happy that even though the numbers weren't changing dramatically there were big changes happening (baby moving down, effacing, etc).
As the contractions got increasingly uncomfortable, I asked for the epidural and got it around 2:30 or so. The epidural went really well and within 5 minutes of it going in I was feeling great. The anesthesiologist said I have a great back for an epidural. My husband, the nurse, and I all laughed. I said, what's that mean? Am I fat, skinny, other?? Haha. Apparently my vertebrae have nice spacing- whatever that means.
After the epidural, she checked me and I was 5cm. At that point I was able to relax and just hang out with out with DH and our family that was with us. I was checked again around 4:45 and the nurse said I was 7-8. And then proclaims, we're having a baby by 5:30! I was like- "what now?!" You think I'm going to finish dilating and push this baby out in the next 45 minutes? Well, she was wrong. But she was funny, she kept coming in saying she was annoyed with the Dr. She kept saying, "I keep telling the Dr to come in here deliver this baby, but she says to let you go." It was funny. She checked me again around 5:45 and I was complete, so the family cleared out to the waiting room and the nurse assistant starting setting up the room. I started pushing around 6:00 and was using the mirror so I could see everything (which was really cool). I didn't use the mirror with DS1 and regretted it. It took a few minutes to figure out the pushing because my epidural was so good I couldn't feel anything. At first the pushing was all happening in my face, but after a couple of contractions I got the hang of it and the mirror really helped.
After about 30 minutes of pushing Ry.an Will.iam was born at 6:29pm on 2/13/17. He weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and is 20 inches long.
Overall my induction went great. My nurse was great, the epidural worked awesome. The epidural was so great that after it kicked in I didn't really feel anything. I literally never felt any more contractions or even pushing. This did make the pushing a little more difficult, but with the help of the mirror I figured it out.
Ryan is doing really well and I feel pretty good, just sore (which is to be expected). So
far breastfeeding is going ok. I have been using the nipple shield, which I had to use the entire year that I nursed DS1. I really hope that I can transition away from it, because it's kind of a pain in the butt. But I know that if it doesn't happen, I can still
Successfully nurse for a long time with it.
And now for some pictures!!
