I thought it was a good episode! You could really feel the despair. The actress that plays Maggie was amazing. Also I seriously thought we were going to get someone dropping dead of dehydration. Oh and this is the first time we've seen the entire group together & I forgot how many of them there are now!
I was also "eh" about the episode, but here's what I'm trying to take away from it:
1) The preacher loses his faith as Maggie has. However, there's a big tempest (that random tornado) and the miraculously survive. I believe the line was something like, "We shouldn't have survived that!" "...But we did." Sort of a divine intervention when people are at their lowest, which reeks of Biblical stuff, in an episode where people lose faith. The whole episode was a big Biblical metaphor.
2) Interesting how Daryl is the first one to protect everyone by holding the barn doors shut from the Walkers, and as usual he tries to do it on his own...just as he wants to be alone for everything else that episode. He can't do it alone, literally. He has his group to back him up, though, and together they make it.
3) I'm glad Daryl and Maggie talked, because they both lost someone close to them but they feel it in different ways. They both needed that talk. Daryl fixes the music box for Maggie which is perfect, since Beth was the musician and she was so...young? Innocent? I don't know the right word.
4) The whole Rick/Daryl thing: "We're The Walking dead/ No we're NOT them". And yet, as they were dragging themselves down the road earlier with the hoarde behind them, it really looked like they were similar. They see the deer thats been eaten--a fawn. Cute, Bambi, innocent. And they they shoot the pet dogs and eat them without hesitation.
5) Who poses as a friend in the end? Aaron. Biblical references abound, the Biblical Aaron was the mouthpiece of Moses and the first high priest for the Israelites, who, you know...wandered a lot. Fought a lot. Iiinteresting...

Ha I do not put as much thought into this as you do MissMusic but good analysis! I will say that the tornado thing irked me. If a tornado touched down that close to a building to uproot trees, the building is at least going to be damaged. I get the whole divine intervention metaphor but a couple boards torn off or a branch through the roof would make me buy it a little more.

Although it was slow and in some parts boring i thought it was a necessary episode. It's good to see them hit rock bottom. I think back to all the other tragedies in the story where it seemed as if they hit rock bottom and this one seems to take the cake. Despair, starvation, loss of faith...I think it's compelling. Darryl is going to be a loose cannon this season. When he finally "feels" I think he won't express it in a loving rainbowy manner. Anxious to see him kind of turn in to a basket case warrior. If that makes sense. So much symbolism this episode it killed me. I was talking the whole time and annoying my husband trying to point out different things. Bravo Maggie. Oh and mmm me likey darryl. In a total kid rock is sexy way I love darryl. I have chronic severe asthma but watching him smoke that cigarette all sexy like made me wanna smoke and do dirty things.
Obviously every episode can't be exciting and this one was not at all. But it always leads up to what's going to come. I'm still curious when that other guy is going to come out. And Sasha almost caused something so I got a little irked at her.
I always enjoy your reviews and thoughts MissMusic . They always make me think and sometimes about pretty deep stuff.
Just finished watching it. I feel like Sasha is being over dramatic of her brother dying. At this point in the journey, everyone has lost someone important to them, so it's kind of annoying she is all "woe is me, let me not follow the plan".
I'm interested to see what this "friend" is all about. He knows ricks name, he left them water. He's been following them, obviously.
