So...just had my 6 week pp visit. The OB and I discussed birth control and since we are firmly done at 2 she suggested the Mirena IUD.
Anyone have experience? The reviews online run the gamete from "love it" to "made me crazy, bled for 6 months and gained a ton of weight"...
I scheduled a visit for May to get it inserted, so I have time to change my mind.
I can't do the tube insert thing because i have a nickle allergy and the OB said the arm one really isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'd prefer not to do condoms indefinitely and I'm worried about pills affecting my milk supply.
H had agreed to get the big V, but I'm all about the double backup to really eliminate the chance for a surprise.

carrots have you done mini pill while bf'ing before? I know they say it doesn't interfere with supply, but I took it and I really attribute it to my issues with low supply with DD1. Maybe I'm just the small percentage it can affect but I just wanted to share my experience.

Well now I don't feel so confident about my iud! I got it to avoid condoms and pills... And 3 months of bleeding? I hope that doesn't happen to me but I have been bleeding since I got it on Tuesday. The cramping is gone but it was pretty unpleasant for about two days.

So my situation is a little unique because I've spent the last 5 years either pregnant, miscarrying, going through IVF, 3rd degree tearing with healing issues and most recently a c section and another year or more of nursing... but, I am DONE doing stuff to my body. I refuse to do anything hormonal or otherwise at this point (with the exception of a possible 3rd kid in 3-4 years). So, it sucks, but condoms it is until we figure out our future and DH gets a V. I can get pregnant quite easily, but I have "old eggs" and lots of losses--if anyone is wondering why I'd need IVF and birth control.
I did know a girl on my bmb for DS who bled a lot for a month or longer and was super cranky so she had her Mirena removed. Very anecdotal, but I remember her being miserable.
I asked about it affecting supply too, but my OB said that because the hormone release is so localized with an IUD there shouldnt be an impact (unlike any of the systemic homonal release forms i.e. mini pill).
Also from kellymom, essentially saying the same thing: Do note that the progesterone-releasing IUD delivers its hormone directly to the lining of the uterus, which only leads to a slight increase in progesterone levels in the blood stream (much lower than that found with the progesterone-only pill). As a result, there is much less chance of side effects from the progesterone than from the injection or mini-pill.
I guess i'm going to give it a whirl and just go in being open to removal if i find it's adversely affecting me.
I have my 6w PP visit this afternoon and plan to ask about the Mirena. I am horrible with pills, and we are tired of condoms lol. Hoping my body does ok with it.

Lurking on this board, but had to offer my two cents.
I had the Mirena IUD. For two years, it was amazing. No period at all and no pregnancies. No adverse side effects.
Then one day, two years in, I had sudden, excruciating pain. My Mirena spontaneously expelled. My OB found it "crumpled up around my cervix" and lacerated part of my cervix.
Obviously, I was thankfully still able to get pregnant and carry to term...and obviously that's an atypical thing that happened, but it did happen to me.
Oh jeez loves2shop4shoes. That's crazy! Thanks for sharing. I'm still on the fence I think because anecdotal stories like this seem to be less rare than I would hope.
