Are THAT many people really turned off by pets in a home that is for sale? I was following a thread in Parenting and I was a little surprised by the number of posters that said a pet or signs of a pet would immediately turn them off to a home. If someone has allergies this makes sense, but it's not like a animal stays with the house. I loathe snakes with a passion, but I'm not going to cross a home off because the current owners have one. It just seems bizarre.
My realtor suggested we have zero signs of pets, so I'd assume there are more than we would think. That's one of the reasons I decided to vacate the house of us and the pets before we put it on the market. With fresh carpet, you'll never know we had pets. It wouldn't stop me if I saw previous owners had pets, but people can be ridiculously picky.

Yes. I've said this before, but yes. Even though I'm a pet owner, I don't want to see evidence of other peoples pets in a house I may be buying. It won't be a deal killer, but I do see it as a negative if I'm touring a home and people left their pets there. Especially for someone like me that doesn't really like / has an allergy to cats. It's just a turn off. I feel like there are far more people that don't like / want pets, than those that keep pets, so that's probably where this comes from.
People nix houses for really stupid reasons. Especially for such a large and lifetime purchase. I think realtors just try to make things as easy and quick as possible, so that means removing all traces of any negatives. That said- it's up to you and how quickly you need to sell. It might just take longer to find a buyer that has no problem with it. To me, I don't care if someone has a pet, but I would be more concerned about any scratching/ smells, etc... Even then it wouldn't be a deal breaker if the home was perfect for me. But if two were similar and one smelled like dog and one didn't- well you know which one I would buy.
Also, I still find long white dog hairs in our house every now and then if we're playing on the floor in Bub's room. It's been 3 months. That stuff just lingers.

Yeah I don't mind (actually I do because it's a PITA) having to remove stuff and I understand the logic. It just really surprised me how many in the thread said that evidence of pets was a deal breaker.

Yea H walked out of two houses and we had a dog at that time lol no logic. We're not pet people but love our pets lol

I feel like people who don't like dogs REALLY don't like dogs. Like either you're allergic to them, or you just think they're filthy. Both of which are reasons to not want a house that is previously occupied by a dog. Even people who like dogs sometimes don't keep them as pets for those reasons, and lots of people choose poodle mixes or non-shedding breeds because they don't want to deal with the hair even if they like dogs. I just think there are not many people who are indifferent about that.

Do open houses, list when the market is empty in your location/ price range and price it well. It should sell quick. If the market is flooded, buyers can be pickier.

It really is a PITA. We were so thankful we had neighbors who would come get our dog out of the house for us. Even after we had an offer, there was an inspection, appraisal and walk-through that we had to have her our for. I'd start looking into doggy daycares where you could drop them off while you're at work if you have a showing. And you can have your realtor try to get showings on the same day or just say it's only available Tuesdays and Thursdays or something like that.

Yeah evidence of pets was a deal killer for us (although I'm surprised at the number of houses we went to that had the dog in the garage/laundry room if this is a common complaint). It's the whole carpet thing and not wanting to think about pets soiling carpet, dander, etc. little did we know that by that logic we should have avoided houses with potty training-aged kids.

Our neighbor is home during the day so when we get to that point I'll probably ask if she would mind bringing them over to their house/yard for showings. We'll probably have to board our cats though, I think our vet will do them for about $50-60/day so we'll probably pick 2 days a week.
I don't even know what's going on with us selling though. My job situation has everything in the air. H is saying that when I get laid off he wants to move away from the area so he thinks we should keep our current home until that happens. I feel like that's a pipe dream though and most likely won't happen (not to mention I may not even get laid off) OTOH, I don't feel like dealing with H throwing a tantrum about it so I'm treading the whole thing very carefully. Sorry to unload like that. Diarrhea of the mouth and all that.

This is true. There has never been any cat piss on any surface of our house ever. Kid pee though- mostly only the kitchen floor. 😁

I've gotten pretty good at the soak up, douse with vinegar, sprinkle with baking soda, and vacuum routine. We'll have to do new carpets at some point anyway, might as well wait until both kids are PT'd.

Hi all! Trying to come back into the land of the living.
JoBub - For me it would depend on what my doctor said. When one mentioned it to me for #2, it was based on how much I was dilated and/or effaced. If it didn't look like labor was starting anytime soon, it would have been a no. They also said it wasn't an option for first time moms. But then LO decide to show up much earlier than expected. You can always schedule it and then cancel if you're not feeling it.

We have a Bissel Spot Bot because the dog barfs a lot. It has come in handy for kid accidents a few times too. I have a feeling if the new owners ever rip up the carpet they're going to see quite a few surprises on the other side of it. We want to replace the carpet in our new house too, but we need to get the dog's issues under control first. I want to start crating her because I think the barfing is anxiety-related. But I keep saying that, and we just haven't done it yet. I'm not sure H agrees with me.
Does yours seem to leave the carpet really wet when you run the auto-clean? I always take the hose and try to suck up more water after it's done. I thought it was a defect, but then ours broke and we got a new one and it's the same way.

Yeah I wouldn't say it leaves it super wet, but it does leave it wet. I usually just leave it to dry, but maybe I should be trying to suction more up.
So pee training is going well (3 pees in). I'm not ready for this. It was just a spur of the moment thing this morning, but he's been peeing on the potty all day. He did go squat in the living room and I didn't catch him in time and he pooped on the carpet - woops. That's going to be the tough part because he's refused to poop on the potty for a while now. I haven't been sitting him a ton because I don't want him to get bored with it and he seems to be holding it and going as soon as he sits down. Seems promising for now, at least.

Are you using a little potty or potty seat? Maybe try putting him on the regular toilet and hold him steady while letting his butt hang a little. The angle may promote easier pooping like squatting. I'm making shit up, so this may be completely whack.

I just want to say that this Friday is my last day of work. And I'm off Wed. / Thur. anyway. So please to include me in your weekday toddler / baby outings.

Yay!! We are always here there and everywhere. We also need to get together with vlagroupie before she has to go back.

He is almost terrified of the big toilet. I need to figure out a way to help him squat. That's what he does off the toilet. Books in front aren't the right position. Right now he'll stand up from the potty to go squat in a corner of the house to poop.

Maybe a taller step stool? We used a 2 step one we bought at homegoods for a while when M was just beginning PT.
dogmama22, sounds like a great start! Seems like everyone has some sort of trouble with poop PT, and nobody's problems are the same. haha. He'll get it!
Bub's first day at the new school went well. They were on the playground when I picked him up, so I only talked to his teacher briefly. She said he had a good day, and napped really well. When we went back in the room, he was excited to show me the magnifying glass toys. And then he spotted a little airplane on the floor and was like "I have to put this away!" and found the right spot for it. So it seems like he feels at home already. He had new pants on, so I thought he had an accident, but when I got home his old pants didn't seem very wet at all, so I think maybe he just didn't point it down far enough and splashed a little. Didn't have a chance to ask.
But, there was nobody at the front desk when I left. So I didn't have a chance to ask anyone if they found my paperwork or if I have to fill it all out again. Not sure what to do about that.
