Hi! I was wondering if you could help me out with this.
LO is almost 3 weeks old. BF has been going well and he's gaining plenty of weight.
However, the last few days he has been pretty gassy. He will fuss and cry for a couple of hours each day and pass a lot of gas while this happens.
I've noticed that on one boob, my left, which is also the one that produces more, LO will sometimes cry and pull away from the breast after a couple of gulps. I then have to relatch him. When he's fussing at this boob it also seems he gulps a lot of air.
What do you guys think, could this be a forceful letdown problem? Latch problem? Related to the gassiness or not? Is there anything I can do?
yes, it does sound like overactive letdown and gas related to that because of the gulping. have you tried different positions- like "laid-back" nursing, where LO is parallel to your body, positioned uphill? then LO is more able to regulate how much he is taking in. you can also try having LO nurse until you get a let-down, and then de-latching and letting your milk flow into a towel for a little while. then when you re-latch LO, the flow won't be as overwhelming. since LO is still so little, i wouldn't do anything to try to change your supply until after 4-6 weeks have passed-- it's likely a temporary problem.
