Hi, ladies! Quick intro. Canadian military spouse and recently left my career to be a SAHM to our 3 wonderful kids; 2 girls and our surprise boy. A surprise boy because I was on BC at the time while we waited for DHs vasectomy appointment (oops!) and he followed his sister who we had TTTC with a hx of loss. He still managed to sneak his way in there and after a minor period of freaking out we couldn't be happier with our family of 5. We just got posted to the west coast after living in Ontario for years, so a lot of adjustments going on.
How old is LO? Just shy of 3 weeks (Feb 16th baby)
How's everything going? Better than expected. This is my 3rd and I was very nervous as my supply was in before my girls were born but it took a few days with DS. We started with expressed milk and syringe feeding because he was so large and lazy on the boob. But my supply came in nicely, he handles my strong let down better than the girls did and he's been much kinder to my nipples. One milk blister and that was about it. Now he's nursing happily on demand and growing like a weed.
Nursing a nearly 12lbs newborn is tricky. So much dead weight.
Who is your biggest BF cheerleader? I don't have anybody in my life who is not supportive, but both of my girls stopped before 1yr (self weaned, not my choice). My goal is to BF not only beyond a year this time but my goal has always been beyond 2 years and though it hasn't happened for me yet, I've heard little comments among my family about extended breastfeeding so I'll be interested to see their reactions if I'm able to make it to my goal and beyond.
GTKY: what is something you do NOT miss about being pregnant? What's something you do? My hips were so painful. Don't miss that at all, makes sense though now since I was carrying my largest baby. I do miss the easy portability of an inside baby. Getting used to being outnumbered by kids was harder than going from 1 to 2!
Hi everyone, new to the board and struggling so figured I need all the support I can get.
How old is LO? 12 days
How's everything going? Rough. DS is so lazy with feeding and doesn't feed well on the breast. He latches ok now with a nipple shield. After seeing LC'S we have been on a 3 step system to help with increasing my supply - breast feed which is brief before he gets really anger at the nipple, feed bottled breast milk, supliment with formula. I pump every 2 hours to try and keep up with giving him some breast milk at each feeding. Sometimes i can only get 1oz and other times 2oz.
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share? I've gotten some tips to try for increasing supply from my bmb today so I'm hoping with those changes, I will notice a supply increase. Seeing the LC again tomorrow.
Who is your biggest BF cheerleader? Myself. My family has 3 generations of FF babies so no one can really help me with breastfeeding. I feel a bit alone in trying to manage time for pumping and caring for a newborn when my H is at work.
GTKY: what is something you do NOT miss about being pregnant? What's something you do? Pelvic pain- it was excruciating at the end. I miss the baby moving
How's everything going? Better than before. We got past Leap 1 and the 6 week growth spurt with our sanity intact. And nye I'm gonna start pumping to build a supplg for back to work. Already have 10 oz in the freezer
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share? Starting to get social smiles! W has been pretty gassy the last few days. Not sure if its because he's taking in more milk or if it's something more like reflux. Sometimes seems like he is straining a little before he farts or burps.
Who is your biggest BF cheerleader? DH
GTKY: what is something you do NOT miss about being pregnant? What's something you do? I don't miss the hip pain and the Braxton Hicks contractions. I miss the movement.
mikaela20 sorry you're having a rough start! Wall of questions incoming, sorry, just hard to see what's going on from this side of the Internet.
I'm mobile so can't see siggy; was your LO early? Is the LC you're working with an IBCLC? Have you done a weighted feed to see how much LO is transferring from the breast? Has the IBCLC evaluated him for lip & tongue ties? Have you discussed an at-breast supplementing system aka SNS (supplemental nursing system) instead of / in addition to the bottle?
It is super important that you are pace feeding all bottles, preferably with a slow flow nipple. Pace feeding is about how you feed the bottle, not when, as baby should always be fed on demand.
Pumping 1-2oz is within normal range at this age. Remember that pump output is not a good indicator of supply.
You are doing great. Be kind to yourself. Triple feeding is so, so draining. But many women get through it and supplement less or none at all. A hands free pumping bra is worth the money.
lilyelayne thats good to hear the amount seems normal. Some pumping sessions produce more or less. My baby seems to want to eat 2.5-3oz's per feed now so the LC said it's a supply and demand issue since I can't produce what he needs.
My LO came via c-section at 38.5 weeks. He is premie size they said at 5lbs 5oz at birth and still under 6lbs. He lost weight last week. What is IBCLC? The LC is a registered nurse and certified LC through a government funded breastfeeding walk in clinic (canada).
Have you done a weighted feed to see how much LO is transferring from the breast? No because he doesn't latch on for long-under 5 mins. At the last LC visit she watched a feed and confirmed he wasn't even swallowing - I never could see any milk on my nipple or his lips before. We tried a nipple shield and that helped his latch and I could see him getting milk. But it's very short before he either falls asleep or starts getting frustrated and screams because he is hungry and it's too much effort.
Has the IBCLC evaluated him for lip & tongue ties? Only the LC at the hospital did and said he didn't have one. I will ask the LC I'm working with now when I go back tomorrow.
Have you discussed an at-breast supplementing system aka SNS (supplemental nursing system) instead of / in addition to the bottle? Is this the tube at the breast? We did this at the hospital before we got him on the bottle. He can't latch great on my short nipples so it was hard to get the tube in a good spot and have him latch properly. It make it more stressful for me to feed him. Are there other systems to feed at the breast?
ETA we are also doing paced bottle feeding per our LC and feeding on demand.
How's everything going? Going really well! Got Miss O's lip tie and Lil G's tongue ties both revised last Thursday. Hate doing the stretches but I know we have to. We have their 1 week follow up Thursday. I unfortunately have t been able to get either Twin to nurse without the shield which is kind of disappointing but since I used one with LO1 for 14 months I'm not surprised. I have semi-flat nipples.
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share? Miss O has a bad diaper rash. Could caffeine be causing it? My other twin is fine. Gonna do a milk bath this afternoon-how much milk do I need? (Diaper free time after...)
Who is your biggest BF cheerleader? No one this time. DH and Mom make comments all the time that I should stop and FF. So frustrating.
GTKY: what is something you do NOT miss about being pregnant? What's something you do? I got PUPPs this last oh and it was hell. Do not miss that!! I do miss the belly and the feeling of a baby inside me. (This was my last so more feels due to that).
mikaela20 sounds like you're on the right track! research is showing that the ability/instinct to suck may develop as late as 39 weeks, so hopefully with a little time & a little weight gain, however that ends up happening, your LO can learn to nurse.
Continue to do lots of skin to skin, as this in conjunction with pumping will raise your supply.
Yes that is the supplementer I was talking about. The other non-bottle supplementing systems I know of do not use the breast, like a finger feeder. Certainly don't do something that's going to make you more stressed!
IBCLC is an international board certified lactation consultant. (link to find one near you) I only ask because LC is a general term used by many healthcare providers who have varying levels of training, sometimes very minimal, sometimes comprehensive. So sometimes when a mother says she's seeing an LC who is less than helpful, finding an IBCLC is a better option. IBCLC pass a thorough certification process including an exam, no matter what country they're located in.
How's everything going? Going well. There have been some days that he is on the boob all day long and that's rough.
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share? My older son will tell me to feed A when he starts crying, it's pretty sweet.
Who is your biggest BF cheerleader? I wouldn't say anyone is a cheerleader but I have support from my DH and my mom, as well as some friends. DH has been pretty awesome though when it comes to me getting interrupted trying to nurse A though and deals with whatever.
GTKY: what is something you do NOT miss about being pregnant? What's something you do? I don't really care for being pregnant but I definitely don't miss the insulin shots and finger pricking from GD. I miss the movement and the unknown possibility of who the baby was.
