We actually didn't even do a gift this year. Her birthday is so close to Christmas and she gets gifts from family so we decided she is good to go in the toy department for now. We decided to wait until this summer for her gift from us when we can get something fun for outside and she isn't on toy overload so she will enjoy it more.

I had the opposite problem. I kept buying him gifts but giving them to him early. So by the time his actual birthday rolled around, all I had was a board book, which I didn't even wrap.
See, no gifts would be okay for E. But somehow, I don't think C would quite feel the same. Yay. I get to go gift shopping tonight after 10 when DH gets home...
We have done event-type gifts in the past for my SD, who I believe is close in age as your daughter. One year we printed out tickets to Disney on Ice for her birthday. Could you do something like that?

Shopping at night will be a fun-ish break, perhaps? We also didn't really do anything at all for M's birthday and she probably doesn't really get it. Next year, we're going to have to round up some friends. I really want to have an un-birthday party for her in the summer, but I feel like that's probably gift-grabby and people aren't fans, even if you say no-gifts.
I actually just accumulated Christmas gifts for the kids as I saw good deals/sales, and then at Christmas I decided what to give them out of the things I had purchased. The overflow gets saved for their birthdays (January and April). It works, as long as I can find suitable hiding places.
Your Target is open after 10, lucky! I hope you found good stuff. My 10 year old is still a toy kind of a gal so in a pinch a could totally pull together an awesome Walmart birthday.
