We're going to Folly Beach SC in June. It's in Charleston so a little closer to you than Hilton Head. It's a small island and not super touristy and only 30 mins from Charleston.
@traceyos - OCNJ and LBI if you somehow haven't yet been, are very family friendly, have cute shops, and have good food. Summer vaca for me = Jersey Shore.
I like ashiscute's suggestion - Charleston was amazing and had delicious food. We went without kids though so I'm not sure of the family friendly factor - L would have been hella bored with most of our itinerary.
I don't know much about the east coast and we're not a beach family, but we loved Chatham/Cape Cod. There's no ocean, but my kids really loved Atlanta. My oldest said it's his favorite place he's been (out of Colorado, Michigan, Massachusetts and Florida)

The north Georgia mountains are really nice too! There is a cool German town that has lots to do, the Cabbage Patch doll factory (both creepy and cool), and waterfalls!!! Oh and north Georgia is the place of the first major gold rush (so they say). I think there is a even a cool kangaroo farm somewhere up there. If you start hearing banjos though, start running....
ETA: Helen, GA is the German town area Dahlonega, GA is the gold rush area, cute college town and my Alma Mater Cleveland, GA Baby General Hospital (Cabbage Patch) Gainesville, GA Botanical Gardens and a really cool interactive play place (I posted pics on IG)
Oh and lots of vineyards too!
Oh and lastly, there is a huge lake not too far from there either.
I love Asheville but it's not that kid friendly. There is the Biltmore house but what kid would sit still for that tour. We mostly go out to eat, tour breweries and drink. The one time we've been since having Dylan, definitely wasn't as fun.
You should check out Carolina Beach or Kure Beach. They are right next to each other. It's a small town - you can walk to everything, nice beaches and good restaurants. It's also less than 30 minutes from Wilmington so you can do touristy stuff there if you're more into that over laying at the beach the whole time. My boss has a house at Carolina Beach and is there pretty much every weekend and we rented a place with my parents at Kure Beach and it was nice as well.
BFP #1 December 2012 - MMC January 2013, D&C February 2013 BFP #2 October 2014 - DD arrived July 16, 2015 BFP #3 July 2016 - MC @ 9 weeks August 2016 BFP #4 Due January 2, 2018 - Please stick baby!
Sunset Beach is my fave NC Beach. It's an island. The beach gets little pools in it that are perfect for toddlers. It's also nice to have a house so you can have fun after the LO goes to sleep. Bonus - Calabash is the next town. Cute shops & the best seafood ever.
You'll also be midway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach if you get bored or it rains.

I'm such a sucker for factory tours.
I feel like it's a lot less of a "factory tour" and more of a creepy tourist attraction in the middle of the mountains. There is a giant fake cabbage patch And a doctor comes out talking about how many "leaves dilated" mother cabbage is before she births a new cabbage patch that you can buy in the gift shop....
