Hi everyone! Interesting thread, I love seeing what you all do!
I currently work as an Elementary School Counselor in a Title 1 school district, so it's not your typical "school counselor" position. A lot of my work is reactive and trauma related due to the population we serve (low SES, government housed, etc.). I saw some of you work in similar environments, so you can understand. Because we're a smaller district, I also take on a lot of admin responsibilities such as data tracking, testing coordinator, 504 coordinator, child study and early special education coordinator, etc. there's never a dull moment!
My husband is currently in the military and is up for orders mid next year, so we are actually debating whether or not I will return for the 2017-2018 school year to just take a year off to be home with the kiddos - (and the thought of going out on maternity leave scares me because I'm afraid I won't be left alone by work because there are not a lot of people trained to do what I do, and they don't have many resources for a replacement). However, we would keep my 2 and 1/2 year old in preschool, but just drop him to 3 days a week. It seems like a great opportunity, but with the military nothing is for certain, and I'd hate to lose my position and have to reapply if for some reason we stayed where we are. We have a lot to think about!
My dream job would be to move onto private practice and open my own counseling office. I'd love to be able to provide therapy to family and/or children. I've debated on going back to school for play therapy, the idea is still out there!
