Let's Complain Here About Social Situations

Just looking to chat about how annoying social settings can be sometimes.



I am very much an extroverted introvert, and I am really feeling the effects of that this evening!



Tell me what you hate about having to be a social creature.

Tonight we hosted 2 of my BILs and their girlfriends for dinner. One of them is here for his yearly visit since he lives 1000 miles away. The dinner was fully my idea and I looked forward to it. We had tacos with black bean and corn salad, and I made bread pudding for dessert. Everything actually went great. We all had a lovely dinner and visit. DS behaved very well.

After everyone left, I realized how wiped I was. Like, being with people doesn't always give me anxiety or exhaust me, but tonight, yeah. I like BILs for the most part, but one girlfriend is hit or miss to have a conversation with, and the other is very new, but I like her okay.

Anyway, I am just mentally exhausted now. I think it might be a bit hormonal too since I think I am going through some hormonal stuff right now. Ugh.

My social anxiety has been through the roof lately. I've been avoiding social situations for the past month or so. Normally I'm able to power through and force myself to get out, but lately I'm really uncomfortable even in the most innocuous situations. It's like, XH and I started out as friends and look how that turned out ... so now I'm suspicious of anyone who wants to be my friend.

When DH and I got back home after our weekend away, MIL, her H, and SIL were there watching the kiddos, which I sooo appreciated! But then we get home and they decided to stay for another 4-5 hours. For whatever reason it gave me all the anxiety. Like, thank you for watching my kids, now can you go? Stop putting mashed up food on a spoon and trying to shove it in my daughter's mouth when she prefers to feed herself off her tray. Yes, I know half of it ends up in her lap. No, I do not care. Stop encouraging G to fake cough and joking about it being pneumonia. It's effing annoying and not funny. Just. Go.

The older I get, the more I realize I'm probably an extroverted introvert. Or an introverted extrovert? I love being around people but sometimes I just feel swallowed up in big social situations unless it's in my comfort zone. And if wherever we are is loud, forget it, I'll be spending all night trying to understand conversations or just smiling and nodding. I get overstimulated and end up miserable.

omg, pbandj714, they needed to get the eff out. that sounds like something my ILs and father would do too.

I am pretty sure I am an extroverted introvert. People will tell me I am outgoing and easy to talk to and such, and I am like, well, if I didn't make myself be that way, you would think I was a cold hearted bitch, because that is the other vibe I tend to give off when I am not in "be social" mode!

Last weekend was the annual preschool auction fundraiser. Before it we went out to the newish brewery for dinner, except we walked in and there was an hour wait. So we wandered the high top/bar area to see if we could find a slot and happened upon 2 other couples from M's class who were having drinks and an app at a high top table.

They said hello, we said hello, yes we are all going over there later, oh yea there's a big wait so we are looking for a bar seat....ok bye.

Would no one else have invited us to sit at their roomy table and grab a drink for an hour? These two couples are close friends, as visible by often being together... But still...it was a little odd. Expand your circles.

Then we were there with them at the auction later. By then we'd drank enough that we actually had fun. We also apparently bought a bouncy house. Whoops.

I'm definitely an introverted introvert. Going over to someone's house for a sales pitch party is the biggest crowd I'm willing to interact with any more. The annual Buddy Walk is a couple hundred - a thousand people, but it's like going to a big, crowded shopping center - you don't have to socialize with anyone outside of your immediate proximity.

The last time we had a dinner party of any kind that involved anyone other than my family was ummmm Thanksgiving 2010?

For our wedding in 2011, the reception immediately after the wedding was just immediate family and the reception for everyone else was more open house style at a park with food from the local grocery store deli.

I also had a situation last week where I had to leave a playdate for 20 minutes to run to the chiropractor. Of course when I came back I was paranoid that they had been talking about me the whole time, because that's the kind of paranoid I am. I annoy myself sometimes.

Stringy that is weird. I would expect the offer to be made, even if they thought you would say no thanks.

People are weird animals.

What is an extroverted introvert? Someone who likes being with people and gets along well but secretly prefers to be home alone with just family? Because that's me.

I have some days at work when I spend the whole day at my desk and don't talk to anyone, and other days I am in meeting after meeting and I really love a lot of my coworkers and get excited and passionate about the subject matter, but at the end of a day of meetings and talking all day, I feel totally wiped out. Like don't even talk to me for the rest of the day.

This is me to a T. I noticed that I used to spend time with friends all the time prior to working full-time which started in my mid-20s. Then once I started working full-time I started seeing friends less and less. Now I usually have social engagements with friends on weekends about 2x/month and that's enough for me. I also have book club once a month on a weeknight. I consider myself in the middle of the extroversion scale or maybe more slightly extroverted, but I definitely need time to myself to recharge my batteries. So maybe that's my complaint--I would be more social if I didn't work so much?

I experienced this yesterday.

I have a friend who is having a mostly successful relationship, but not without "I think that we might break up" issues. She keeps asking me for very specific baby advice, like tips for traveling cross country with kids. I'm all, "when you have a kid and are getting ready to travel cross country with them, let's talk. Until then, there are probably much more pertinent uses for your brain space."
