Idk if we've talked about this yet, but I'm debating which pump to get and thought I'd survey what people are doing, for those of you planning on bf'ing and/or pumping. I had a Medela PISA last time, plus a Medela hand pump for easy pumps. Debating getting a Spectra this time, or possibly a monthly rental hospital grade. Anyone have any thoughts on Spectra? What else are you looking at?

I literally just called the supply store to find out what my upgrade cost will be for the spectra s1. That's what I'm getting! Only $40 out of pocket! From all my research the biggest gripe about the spectra is that it's harder to find parts but that overall people have been happier with it so that's what I'm getting. ☺️
Me: 32, Wife: 38, Together for 5 years, Married for 2 years IUI #1 (8/2016): Letrozole, Ovidrel, Crinone = BFN IUI #2 (9/2016): Letrozole, Ovidrel, Endometrin = BFP!! EDD 5/26/17
I got the Spectra, and insurance covered it entirely (weee). I got it mostly because people said it was easier (being a closed system). Otherwise, I was going to get the PISA, and I was happy with that too.
I also got the Spectra (S1, the rechargeable) but obviously I haven't used it and can't tell you much about it yet, other than it having good reviews. Does your insurance cover renting a hospital grade pump?
I had a Freestyle last time (pre-ACA so out of pocket) and loved it for its portability and size. I got another one this time around. A $145 upcharge, but worth it I think. I'm going to be using that thing 2-3 times a day 5 days a week for a year at minimum, might as well have one I like. I read up on the spectra, but I really wanted something small that could fit in my bike bag easily.

I was a breastfeeding failure last time but I had a PISA. I never got more than a few drops out using it. So after some research, I decided to try the Spectra S2 this time and see if I have better luck. I went with the S2 rather than trying to pay to upgrade to the S1 because I am not sure BFing is going to work for me and I don't want to spend a bunch of money again only to give up after a week. And I figure if it does work and I need something more portable, I always have my barely used PISA to fall back on.
I had a Medela, although I can't remember what kind and it's packed away still. I guess I liked it well enough but BFing didn't work for me so it was more a source of stress than anything so I'm not a good judge.
I have heard very good things about the Spectra though! If I worked outside the home then I would look into the Spectra but my Medela will work for occasional use

I exclusively pumped with a spectra. Started with a symphony in the NICU, then a PISA at home, then I got my spectra. I'd choose the spectra over all the others! I had a ton of medela parts, plus it's super easy to find medela parts, so I hacked it to use them and it worked great. Plan on getting another spectra this time around

sleepymonkey not a failure! Your baby was fed and seems to be turning out pretty awesome
(Sorry, the bf/ff issue is one of my things lol)
Thanks. I sure felt like a failure at the time but giving up was the best thing for me and DD because we were both so frustrated. I was seriously considering not even trying this time but I figured it's worth a shot and if it doesn't work again, formula is a fine option. DD turned out really healthy and very smart so it did ok by her!

I have a Spectra S1 that I used with DD for almost a year and have no complaints about it. I never had a problem ordering parts online. I debated trying the Freemie cups but I'm leaning towards just sticking with the hands free bra based on reviews that say they didn't get as much output with the Freemie - anyone have any experience with them?

i have an ulterior motive, as I was formula fed and I think I'm splendid. lol. But I'm glad you're going into it with less stress this time.

+1. I combo bf/ff because of supply issues and while I was really upset at first, it ended up being the best of both worlds
We had MSPI challenges with DD1 and ended up FF....it was harder on me then her....and I'm another FF baby that turned out just fine ;-)
I think with DD2 I was more relaxed about it, more knowledgeable about our issues (MSPI again) and had a much more supportive pediatrician....i finally made her night wean at after 2 because of this pregnancy
Another big believer that a fed baby =happy baby and good parents :-)
Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves and with so much access to info and social media overload put too much pressure on ourselves
My insurance only covers cost for either a Medela or Ameda pump. I'm got the PISA since I found it more highly recommended over the Ameda. My insurance covered the fulll cost. I heard great things about the Spectra and was pretty bummed when I found out my insurance didn't cover it.
