Given the chance, would you take a trip overseas with a 3.5 y/o and a 4-5 month old?
DH has a trade show in Germany in November and we can tag along. I've been 5-6 times and am familiar with the country and travel in general. Just not with 2 kids, car seats, strollers, etc.
We can spend some time with family so I won't have to be on my own the whole day while DH is working.
Yes. I'd gamble that 4-5 months is nearing the end of the easy to travel with window and after that you have a few years until it seems manageable again (i.e. They can color, watch tv, etc).

Especially if it's half paid for via work.
That's really why I'm considering it. I have not been since I was pregnant with r. We were supposed to go when he was new but I couldn't travel. So if we don't go on this trip I think it will be another 3 years before I feel like tackling it.
We would be able to fly together. It's also possible that MIL will want to go along so that would help too.
I know we will need car seats and the stroller. We can use public transportation in Frankfurt but not where the family lives. We will need a car.
Does anyone have experience with the ridesafe vest for toddlers?

Stringy that is the car one. We would probably get the flight one too. I just can't imagine dragging a huge car seat everywhere for r. The walk through the airports and customs in Frankfurt is looooooong.

We flew through Montreal with M last year and dealing with all the luggage/car seat/customs with just M was awful. No matter how much you plan and organize, car seats on planes just suck.
If someone is picking you up you could use CARES on the plane and then buy a seat to use there.
Otherwise, from my most recent travel, I would recommend each parent wearing one kid, carrying one back pack and carrying the lightest car seat that you feel comfortable using. Use bungees or a bag to create a carrying strap. Wheeling the car seat proved to be a major PITA because it has to be detached and reattached at every stage. Our big plane had aisles that were about 1/2 inch too narrow to wheel our seats through. So we had to stop in the middle of the plane and detach everything. Then we didn't have enough hands and a flight attendant had to help us. Just carrying them was so much easier on the way back. After we got our big luggage from baggage claim we just slung the car seats over the handles.

We will have to see how it works out I guess. We will definitely need a stroller as we will have the infant car seat and we tend to go a lot of places that require walking but are generally stroller friendly with the family. They had a newborn in our last trip and used their stroller a ton.

You might be able to rent car seats at your destination. Then you don't have to worry about your seats getting abused by baggage handlers, if you are considering that route.
And not that anyone is checking, but there are different certifications used on car seats in Europe. I don't know that they are engineered to different standards or anything (there might be some minor things) but it's probably just different regulatory agency approvals. And probably trade protections.
Oh hell yes. Id go no matter the obstacles, if you are up for the challenge. I have a 6 YO, and 2 "stepkids" ( I hate that word) and the single thing I resent the most is that I waited to a degree to resume my normal life, and now - School schedules and so forth. I would never miss a chance to travel and feel like a fully rounded human again. Even with car seats.

Car seat logistics aside, I would probably only do a trip like this if I knew there would be some child-free time. Hopefully with family around you could make that happen.

That could happen if mil goes along. I'm sure we could get a dinner date night.
