I'm showing my old. How do Poscasts work? Can you only listen to them on iPods? Are they free or not? When do you listen to them (car, train, gym)? Which ones do you subscribe to?
I listen to them on my phone! I use Google play music to listen to mine! But I know there are other apps as well. I listen to them while I'm cleaning, driving, sewing, and sometimes in the the bath
I really like the birth hour, longest shortest time, I liked missing Richard Simmons and I'm starting s town. I know there are a ton more that are really good as well!
I just downloaded one a few months ago, because they were talking about what really went down at Jamn 94.5 when they let the last veteran morning host go a couple years ago. I have an iPhone and the podcast app was already on my phone. I clicked on a Facebook link and downloaded it there. I listened to it in my car. You can listen on other devices and I believe most are free. I only listened to one in my life, and didn't subscribe to more.

A podcast is just a big audio file you can download (or stream) from a site. The name throws people, but it's not that different from downloading or streaming a song. You can use an app, but usually your phone or computer just needs to be able to play audio files and it will default to that program to play on your device.
I think the benefits of using an app would be things like organization - more helpful if you have a bunch that you listen to, just like music - and the ability to subscribe to specific podcasts, so when a site puts out a new one, you would get it automatically rather than having to go to the originating site every time. There may be other benefits but I don't use an app because I hardly ever listen to podcasts. Not because I don't like them, but because I don't have a chance to listen.

I love listening to podcasts while I do chores around the house. I like ted radio hour and the precious little sleep podcast. H listens to "the art of manliness," and it's not quite what it sounds. There are some really interesting topics on that one, so I listen to some of those too.
I use the app Pocket Casts on my Android, and I sync it using bluetooth to my car. So, that's mainly where I listen to them. I have older kids who listen, too, so that affects my casts. NPR Politics is my favorite political podcast, but I also like What You Missed in History Class, and my kids like Brains on! and Stories podcasts.
I have an iPhone and download from ITunes or within the Podcast Ap.
I'm a nerd and mainly have only listened to language ones when I studied Spanish (Coffee Break Spanish, Showtime Spanish). I also love Away with Words which is about words/phrases and where they come from or oddities in language in general.
Other non-gramophile ones I enjoy are:
Freakonomics serial This American life Wait Wait Don't Tell Me (this is like a game show) Snap Judgement
I listen to them when cleaning or driving and just play them from my phone.
There have been a few Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) and Joe Rogan Experience that I've enjoyed but he is more into hunting/fishing and conservative discussions.

Thanks to this thread I downloaded some podcasts and will start listening to them on my walk to/from work.
I was reading an article that said that a lot of the most interesting and intelligent people are constantly exposing themselves to new information for hours a day (reading articles, listening to podcasts, watching documentaries, etc.). I don't have a LOT of extra time in my day but my commute is a time where I can definitely listen to some podcasts.
My neighbor just explained podcasts to me. I think I will check them out. I do spend about 8-12 hours a week in the car (6-8 of which are alone on my walk back and forth to work).
My commute is about to increase from 10 minutes each way to 30, so I'm about to get back into podcasts in a big way. DH spends almost 2 hours in the car every day and we are on the road as a family a lot, so we listen to a lot.
I used to use the stitcher app on my phone but (at least at the time) it only let you stream so it used up too much data. Now I use the iPhone Podcasts app and you can set it up so podcasts download when you are on wifi and then you can listen anywhere and not eat up your data. They delete after you listen to them. The only downside is that if you subscribe to a lot or get behind in listening, they pile up and you have to go delete them if your phone storage is low.
For me, living in a very rural, conservative area, podcasts, J15, and my friends/family elsewhere, are my lifeline to the outside world, so I listen to a lot of things that are very left-leaning, like Slate podcasts.
Recommendations: -Serial -S-town (just finished....so fascinating) -NPR Political podcast -Slate Double X podcast -Slate Mom and Dad are Fighting -Slate Political podcast -Another Mother Runner
I've heard a lot of these because they are DH staples, but they are not my favs- may appeal to some of you though: -NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour -WDW Prep to Go -Be Our Guest Podcast -DIS Unplugged ....other random Disney podcasts I can't remember
Delurking to say, listen to Call Your Girlfriend! It's a weekly phone call between two smart, funny, awesome feminist ladies. By far my favorite podcast!

I love podcasts! As PP have explained, there are a ton of ways to listen to them. I prefer the Pocket Casts app for organizing my podcasts, but it costs $ and the regular podcast app that comes with an iphone is fine.
What sort of podcast you listen to really depends on your personality. I have about 5 I listen to on a regular basis and then about a dozen more that I listen to less regularly.
I really love the Gist (with Mike Pesca). He talks current events and always has great guests. The podcast is not necessarily political but he does lean left.
I also love Converations with Tyler (economist Tyler Cowan does very extended interviews with amazing guests. I loved one he did awhile back with Steven Pinker... he threw some serious shade on Noam Chomsky in the way only academics can).
There's also a podcast that I listen to less often called "Happier" that has a lot of really helpful things you can do to make life a little easier/better.
If you're into comedy, there's a ton of those types of podcasts too. And mystery. Really, anything youre into, you'll be able to find something that you'll love.
