Ok so our new house has ugly, old laminate countertops. We may do a kitchen Reno in 2-3 years so I'd like to replace them with something I won't hate, will last 3-5 years without looking like total shit, and I won't be upset about getting rid of if we rearrange the kitchen layout later. Is there something nicer/more durable than laminate but less expensive than granite that is also not totally ugly? I'm seriously considering a dark stained butcher block or wood. Am I totally crazy?
Would you consider painting them? They have special paint for counters. You can do just a solid color, or a fancy stone look. Cheap, would look a lot nicer than old laminate, would not be a heartbreaker to get rid of when you're ready for sparkle quartz or whatever.
@wafflesfriendswork, another thing to look into - seeing if there are any stone yards nearby. We got a remnant piece of quartz for our basement bar area and it was like $100 and they cut it to size, finished the edges and sealed it. The piece we got was probably 3'x3' but they had a lot bigger pieces too.

@wafflesfriendswork , we were considering butcher block for our kitchen. IF you get good butcher block, it is actually not cheaper (or much cheaper) than granite. You also have to be very, very fastidious with taking care of it and oiling it or it could get rancid. There are solid surface countertops which are a little cheaper than granite and not hideous. They're NMS but they may serve the purpose for a few years. But if it is really only going to be a few years, I agree with kristhegirl , it probably makes sense to just paint them.
+1 to all of this!! I cringe when I hear butcher block because of all the upkeep and $$$
@wafflesfriendswork my Mom has butcher block (she got it from Ikea!) and she really loves it. We lived there with her for a few years so we helped with the upkeep and honestly it was not bad at all. She has had it for several years now and has not had any issue with it. She loves cooking and spends a lot of time in the kitchen so it sees a lot of action. We will be doing a kitchen reno (thanks tax return) this summer and we most likely will do butcher block for our new counters.

amch8, so so sorry about your mom. What a ridiculously shitty situation. I'm sending you all the wine, hugs, and well wishes that you and your family deserve.
I'm fairly certain I forgot to brush my teeth today. I'm gonna have to get to the pharmacy and stash a toothbrush in my desk.
The Allergist hasn't received results of R's blood work we had done over a week ago. Grrrr I hope they can find it.
A drug rep brought donuts today and one was chocolate glazed with bacon on top. sharebear05 I wished I could send it to you for your bacon-fest (just a little chocolate is ok right?)

Does anyone have good mineral sunscreen recommendations for sensitive skin? (looking for Juliette). We used Babyganics last year and that was fine, but it seems like this year it's giving her a contact dermatitis type reaction.

I got some Alba unscented for kids for this year. It hasn't bothered Elena so far.
italianmommy, I don't know if this is considered mineral sunscreen but the only one that we use on Dylan is Neutrogena Pure and Free baby sunscreen. She has eczema that flares up with any other sunscreen that we've tried.

Just got this note from the director of Dylan's preschool:
"I wanted to make your aware that a student in your child’s class went home early due to our suspicion of lice. Please check your child for lice and lice nits and let me know if you see any evidence."

amch8, that's such a suck situation with your mom. Where did her cancer start? I'm not sure I ever updated on here, but my MIL has Stage 4 breast cancer. Seeing what my husband is going through really makes me empathize with you so much more. It's not even fair. I hope the infusion chemo works and isn't too painful/awful for her

italianmommy - I use California Baby on her (and my) face because my eyes are super sensitive and it's the only sunscreen that hasn't made me want to claw them out when it inevitably finds its way in. For her body we either use the same stuff or the Blue Lizard.

I tried quite a few last year and thinkbaby was my favourite! It rubs into the skin really, really well. It's not cheap though.

Rustoleum has a kit to paint counters. End result looks like granite and it's about $200. I researched this heavily for our last house and was going to do it, but got pregnant with P and didn't want to breathe in fumes. Everything I read on it states that great prep work is key to a good result. We ended up just getting new cabinets and counters about 2 years later, so I never tried it myself.
I would try this. Butcher block is a cheap option too (check out IKEA). I really love the look of butcher block, personally, even more than granite.
I know we have talked about this before but what leggings (not LLR) is everyone a fan of? I just had my second pair of LLR leggings get holes in them and I need new black leggings.
I have a few pairs from Costco and I love them. They're long, comfy, hold up well, and have a high waist which I love. I don't know the brand, but they came in a pack of 2 and they're my favorites.

I gave my notice! My boss was a bit surprised, but it went well.
Right before giving my notice I ran into the hospital CEO in the hall. Keep in mind this is a small hospital, 19 beds total and not many people work here. He stopped and asked if I work here, what department, and then introduced himself..... this is how valued I am as a staff member here apparently. I'm so glad to be leaving!
I am so hungry right now, but I'm at the Y doing homework. The snack machine is right next to the Fun Zone, so if I go get something the girls will see me. I feel like a prisoner.
wineandcake when do you start your new position? When is the big move down south? I'm so happy for you! Your parents must be thrilled too!
I start May 15th! My last day here is the 12th so I'll be moving over that weekend. H is staying up here for a bit longer to tie up loose ends then he'll be joining us. Still not sure what he'll end up doing for work, but we're not overly worried about that just yet. I'm pretty sure my mom is the most excited of everyone, she's been waiting so long for this.
