Can anyone share any successful fundraising methods you used for your adoption? Right now we are selling t-shirts, which is going pretty well, but it's just definitely not going to bring in thousands of dollars.
One of my friends was planning to adopt and they had a yard sale. They had friends and family donate items to sell.
Just thinking a bit outside of the box, you could approach local restaurants to see if any would run a fundraiser and give you a % of proceeds from a given night towards your adoption and in turn you hopefully bring business to the restaurant with advertising your event.

If I think of other ideas I'll come back
I think our local Chick-Fil-A does this.
I honestly hate fundraising, but we don't have thousands of dollars hanging out in our bank (and I also now have like 28K in student loans I have to start paying back in Aug. so...) The thought of having another massive loan makes me break out in hives. We try to be as debt free as possible.
We've been trying to fundraise but not very successfully. We also did t-shirts. We sold coupon books (the Attractions Book) which was pretty easy. The only other thing we've done so far is a gofundme.
We have not done them but a lot of people in my church have. There have been a couple of dinners: chili and spaghetti; with raffle prizes and other items for sale like commemorative water bottles and jewelry. Another of our friends partnered with a website that helps families fund adoptions. The website has different items for sale like coffee with proceeds going towards the adoption. There are also a few places that will do matching grants.
For the chili one, they had different people being chili and you could pay ($1) to vote for the best one. And since most people don't have cash, they had a card reader and then handed out tickets for people to vote.
I am sorry that I don't remember any of the websites for the water bottles or the coffee. I am wondering if a google search of fundraising merchandise might lead you to a website where you can do that.
We have not done a fundraise. We actually saved our money until we were able to pay for the adoption and all expenses related to a child (we used private agency to adopt an older special needs child). Maybe that is an idea. Open a good savings account and save some money every month until you can afford the adoption fees. Some people use "Gofundme" for a bunch of stuff so maybe you want to look into that. Another idea would be for you and your partner (if you have one) to get a second job to increase the income. When my husband and I were with no kids we would pick up extra jobs and extra shifts here and there to save the money faster. That is a really quick way to save money too. I would clean houses and babysit on the weekends and my husband would pick up extra shifts.Just an idea...
I wanted to also bring up that as of now there is a federal tax credit for adoption. I don't know if the current president has any plans to change that. But we were able to get about 13k back as a tax credit. That's huge! We also are fortunate that our employer has adoption benefits.
For both we had to pay out of pocket and then get reimbursed.
Do you have any relatives you can take a loan from? I know this isn't always feasible or desired but for some it works.
It's tough to just save that much money. Let's say you need $30k. If you save $300/month that takes 8 years!
I was going to mention the tax credit, but we looked into it recently because we will adopt all three of our kids this year but they changed how they do it in the last couple of years. So you can only eliminate your tax liability but you don't get the money as a refund. Now, that is the way my husband and I read it and we are not tax experts in any way. So I will be elated if I'm wrong.

You are correct on this one. We used the tax credit and you cannot get the money itself, only use as tax credit, however, we could get a lot of money back from what we have paid from our paycheck AND you do not need to use everything in one year. I am actually using 6K for this year and the rest for next year. I think it is great!
lbey, so since you can apply the credit towards your tax liability, you can basically all the income you've paid throughout the year as the refund? Does that question make sense?

In our case, we paid taxes out of our paycheck as usual. When we entered our adoption tax credit (about 6K) we received that in return from what we have paid. Does in make sense? So we did get a very good tax refund this year because of the adoption tax credit and we still have 7K to use next year because you dont need to use it all in one year. I would not do an adoption counting with that money though because we never know when things will change, specially when it comes about taxes! but I ma the kind of person that does not count on money that is not on my hands...

Yes this was exactly what happened with us. We worked and had our normal taxes taken out of our paycheck and then when we filed we got back like 13k or whatever the max was which was money we had paid in taxes all along the course of the year. We used it all in one year because we paid all adoption related things in one year.
For us it really was like getting $13k off our adoption even though we did have to pay it up front because otherwise we would have just paid that tax money anyway.
