comicSans, There are some kids that get penalized for attendance in regular school. Why is this only applicable to them and not online students? I can guarantee they aren't spending the suggested 6 hours a day online to do their schooling.
Because it's all about what you've signed up for. If you're in a situation where you are showing up to school to learn, you have to show up. If you learn well on your own time and you have the option, why not?
H was homeschooled for a year. Each morning his mom had a notecard with the work for the day and he had to complete it before he could play or do anything else. It's a situation I think probably worked really well for him and his personality. Something like that would have worked well for me too, and I could see it working for DD.
People learn at different paces and in different ways so if they're still academically sound, it shouldn't matter if they're sitting bored in a classroom or doing it at home.
I'm not against online HS classes. But I don't think you should be able to start at 8th grade. Maybe 11-12. I can't quite articulate my feelings on it. It just seems to me as a double standard. Kids attending school have to adhere to attendance standards so why aren't online students as well? It is suggested they spend 6 hours a day, but how can you really monitor it?
I think that as long as the requirements are the same and monitored, kids should be allowed to "attend" school online. I don't think it'd work for DS because he seems to thrive with the structure of DC, but to each their own.

I don't see why it matters. It is a different standard, but why should school be a one size fits all solution? If a kid can get donee what they need to get done in 4 hours instead of 6, why should it matter to anyone else?

I think people will have lots of anecdotes about people that are home schooled and can't socialize or couldn't handle the college/ work scene after being schooled by themselves or their mother their whole life. And then there will be anecdotes of out going, sports loving, social/ professionally successful people who were home schooled. There are just the same amount who could talk about how public school saved them from their awful home life or religious strictness or that public school ruined their child with drugs or bullying. You just can't generalize this type of thing. It's best to know our own situations. We try to protect those that can't protect themselves but that's not always getting them in public school.
I've stated this before but my reasons against home schooling are:
teachers are highly trained to teach specific subjects, no one can teach ALL the subjects to the same standard at HS level. I would not want my HS history teacher teaching Math and vice versa unless they were qualified to do so
I took DD on a play date and you girls got moving on the discussion.
I still don't know why it matters what anyone chooses to drive, I could only see complaining or caring if said person is complaining about the vehicle they chose to buy.
Homeschool is a preference of each parent but I will not ever support it nor home school DD, barring any unforeseen health complications of course.
I don't expect a gift nor do I want one on Mother's Day. But the day needs to be recognized by H and I want to do the least and have a nice family day.
If there are rules posted about how to conduct yourself in a public space, especially where children are concerned, you should read and follow the rules. It chaps my hiney when adults and their children are compromising cleanliness and safety because the rules don't apply to them.

need examples
The mall play area: no shoes, but adults wearing street shoes, following their kid around; no strollers & no good or drinks, but moms parking their big stroller in the play area with their large Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee in the cup holder; no kids over a certain height & no running and jumping, but tall, older kids chasing each other and jumping off of everything.
The chick that was full on feeding her 1 year old lunch on the floor of the library children's room during baby story time. I should not have to constantly drag my baby away from your chip crumbs and floor cheese. No food allowed is clearly posted.

Lol at chaps my hiney. I say things like that to Dh and he always yells, "get off my lawn, old lady!"

those would all bug me too, except the coffee in the stroller because i'd think it means no kids dropping food and drink over everything not me nicely drinking my coffee while my ass is parked on a bench

Yeah the coffee probably bothered me more because I wanted coffee too, but I follow the rules. There is potential for it to be spilled though, and I don't really want my kids crawling through coffee soakage.
I drive a truck, but I use it pretty much every day. I use it to pick up chicken feed and bedding, tow the camper or boat, and haul lumber. The worst part of having a truck is helping people move. Everyone needs a friend with a truck. My brother just bought a truck for his 2 hr commute every day. He has FOMO and can't let his siblings have something he doesn't have.
As far as mother's day, I like to hear that I am appreciated because it doesn't happen often. If DH wanted to buy me a new truck, I won't turn it down. (That would never happen, but I will continue to dream.)
And I drove a civic when I moved to CT and on the one highway there is a hill and I almost got stuck during a snowstorm. I will keep my AWD.
AWD isn't what is going to make the difference in not getting stuck on a highway (may on other types of roads) in snow - even on a hill. Front wheel drive is fine for that. Putting on good winter ("snow") tires will make a big difference - even if not studded - different and deeper tread and a different formulation of the rubber that gets better traction at cold temperatures - I think because it stays softer. And having higher clearance than a Civic has will help in some situations too. I sometimes get stuck because of the low clearance (if the snow is too deep), but that's all.

And snow tires probably cost a lot less than the cost of AWD. But if people knew that then the car dealerships wouldn't be able to upsell.

We have awd for the mountains and whatnot here, but it's incredible helpful in driving in the wet conditions. There's a reason almost everyone I know here drives or drove a Subaru at one point.
SpinsOffResonance. Do you still get tags? Surely you've been saving up your unpopular opinions over the last few months.
I get notifications when I come in here... I've been up past midnight every night this week working on DD's school yearbook so I haven't been here much at all. Should be working on it now, but I'm in bed, I just had to come here to drop the mother of FIL stories, I guess it's going in randomly thread

That must be a pretty fancy yearbook for preschool!
Which brings me to an uo but it's not Thursday anymore. So I'll just say I wish a parent would do the yearbook for my class. And i hope you are appreciated for all the work you've done on it!
