DD would not sleep unless I held her. It was rough. So far this little guy is much easier in that respect. I joked with DH that I was able to eat dinner without holding him or putting him in a carrier, so he already has DD beat in terms of ease!
No tongue or lip tie. He was checked by multiple people. No thrush. Latch looks good. I don't know. I think it is just a combination of his small mouth and my flat nipples :/ online searching tells me it's called the "60 second sizzle" although sizzle doesn't do it justice. 60 seconds of pain by 1000 swords maybe. He is transferring milk well and has surpassed his birth weight at 9 days, so I'll just have to continue toughing it out and hope it gets better sooner rather than later.
hugs, that's so tough! we did have a LC help us with latch, but it didn't totally solve things and there was some toughing it out.
**i'm about to say something gross**
i remember a low point being when i had to pull a scab off my nipple bc it was hanging and i was worried DD would choke on it.

I was looking at YouTube on how to get a good latch and honestly, I'm pretty sure it's just my nipples causing difficulties. Total TMI, but I didn't realize how short my nipples are compared to other nursing moms'. It's no wonder I've had the same struggle with both my kids. They have no choice but to have a shallow latch at first cuz there ain't enough nipple!

I have flat nipples (per LC at the hospital after C was born) Have you tried a nipple shield? It helped C latch, I just had supply issues after.
applemuffins I was going to ask about a nipple shield too! We had some latching issues in the hospital (primarily caused by things we were told to do by various people) and the nipple shield made latching way easier. We were able to wean off of it the first week home and have been good ever since.

Yes, I've been using a shield! We will work in weaning off of it in a bit once we get the hang of things. I used one with DD and she decided she was done with it cold turkey. I forget how old she was, but it was within the first 2 months. Right now I'm battling over supply as things regulate, so hopefully it won't cause supply issues.

FFFC: I used a shield the entire time I breastfed DS (15 months before he tapered off and quit) due to having short and small nipples. We tried to get him to latch without it, but it was like he didn't recognize that I was trying to feed him. Honestly it wasn't a big deal to me to keep using it. I plan to use one again this time around.
Well OB has decided it's time to induce due to my low platelets. We go in tomorrow morning to start the process. Ahhhhhhh!
How is it going so far?
Slow. Boring. LoL. They monitored me for like 2 hours, gave me Cytotec with another 2 hours of monitoring, allowed me to walk around the hospital unmonitored for another 2 hours. Now I am hooked up again for an hour. The nurses think I'm contracting too quickly for another dose so I may have to wait another hour to see if they can give me a 2nd dose or not. I am not really feeling much from the contractions even though they are frequent and pretty large on tge monitor. Probably going home at some point for the night and returning in the AM for pitocin.

trebletrouble13 yes!! He seems to have no idea there is a nipple in his mouth unless I have the shield on. I would like to get rid of it eventually because it fills with milk and makes it harder to nurse when out and about, but if I have to use it the whole time, that's ok too.

Have you talked to a lactation consultant? To start getting away from using it, they recommended that I start each nursing session using it to get baby started and then partway through take it off.

I was sent home for the night to return again tomorrow to try either more Cytotec or Pitocin depending on what my cervix is up to. My OB basically explained this was what was most likely to happen so at least I knew it was a possibility and I'm not disappointed. Having tons of "Braxton Hicks" feeling contractions and maybe some that feel like period cramps so hopefully they're doing something so that tomorrow we can start with the Pitocin.

My FFFC. I only need the nipple shield on my flat right nipple but I've been using it on both this time because the latch hurts less. Im not that great with BF so it was the only way I knew actual milk was coming out now

So this is the part where we don't have babies yet apparently! Another day with no change. We have decided to stop trying for now since clearly my body isn't ready and they will monitor my platelet count closely. We may try again in a few days to a week. The OB gave us the option of going ahead with Pitocin even though I was still 1cm and 75% effaced which I had basically been since Wednesday or go home. I really believe my body and baby aren't ready and I want to avoid a c-section if possible so I believe going home was best. My head wasn't in the game anymore either after 3 doses of Cytotec and 1 of Cervidil with no change. I needed the break.

teachermomtobe - wow, that is a lot of work for no change! I'm glad that they will be able to monitor your platelets and you'll get a break, I would want one too after your last few days.
teachermomtobe that must be quite the emotional rollercoaster, expecting to have a baby soon and then not making progress. But I think it's awesome that everyone is cool with acknowledging that baby isn't ready and waiting longer until she is!

teachermomtobe - Sorry for no change and such a frustrating process! I'm glad they're giving you the option to go home and relax. Hopefully your body will be ready in a few days or so.
