So, I've already called my OB, I'm just waiting for a call back. I wanted to see if anyone else is feeling like it is more difficult to get a "good" breath in? I noticed today at work that it was difficult to breathe in deeply, but chalked it up to being busy today and a few stressful patients that got my blood pressure up. Since I've been home, even resting with my feet elevated and propped up with pillows, it is still difficult to breathe. Anyone else?

Good idea to have a rest and keep all activities low. Something similar happened to me along with a racing heart out of nowhere. I also had that feeling where no matter how deep/slow my breath intakes were, it felt like it wasn't enough and I wasn't getting enough air. When I called my clinic and explained to the midwife she was quite concerned with the racing heart and my difficulty in breathing. She suggested I go to emergency but I said that it all stopped and I felt normal after 10mins. She said that if it happens again and lasts for 30mins then to come to Emergency straight away. It hasn't happened since so I never got anything checked. How does your heart feel? Is it racing? Drink some water as well while you are resting.

Eekkss anything lung and heart related always gives me pause. Shortness of breath at rest can be no joke...keep us posted but I hope you get evaluated!
I'm short of breath all the time. When I actually have to walk and do things it's super bad but even at rest I never feel fully normal. I hope your doc calls back soon and it turns out to be nothing for you.
I heard back and she wanted me to try my inhaler (history of asthma, but no issues on YEARS) or breathing treatment and rest for 30 minutes. If it hasn't improved, she wanted me to go to the ER.

I had this first trimester and spoke with my doctor about it. It's partly hormonal and partly due to the lungs being compressed by organ/baby. Obviously in first tri for me it was completely hormonal, but she warned that in second and third tri it was going to get worse because of the compression issues exacerbating the hormonal ones. I rarely used my inhaler before pregnancy, but now I have to use it more frequently.
Yes! I woke up a few nights ago because I couldn't breathe. The next day I called my doctor and he said if it happens again to go to the ER. I felt like crap all day and that night the same thing happened. I had shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and I got really dizzy and nauseous. DH took me to the ER and they said I'd had a panic attack. The ER doc said that I may be experiencing pregnancy induced anxiety!
I'm feeling better after the treatment, I've just been resting on the couch. I think for tonight, I'm just going to monitor tonight and if it happens again tomorrow, I'll try to get in to the dr.

I have had shortness of breath quite often too, and what feels like BH contractions which always take my breath away (STM) but the other night I had a super bad "episode" where I thought for a split second about going to the ER over it! But instead I just tried to relax because panicking over it obviously made it worse. It was right at bedtime anyway so I eventually went to sleep and woke up fine the next morning. Pregnancy is weird.
I also have had this problem and it's very scary (although I think poor DH was more freaked out than I was). It happens to me periodically and I find it easier to take deep breaths when sitting rather than lying down. I haven't had it severely enough that I've had to call my dr, but I'm with PP - if it lasts for an extended period of time, go to urgent care or the ER!

Yes it is! I was just telling my DH this last night. I just hate that I feel like I don't have control over my body. It's a horrible feeling.

I frequently feel short of breath too, if I'm walking or even just sitting and having a conversation. I've attributed it to being short and having such a short torso, that I know baby is crowding out my lungs. I would definitely say that if it continues for 30 minutes or more and you can't get in air to go to the ER. Make sure to rest and take it easy!
Glad you are feeling better! I have a history of asthma too that hasn't bothered me in a long time and it didn't through my last pregnancy but every once in awhile this time I notice a shortness of breath on occasion. Whoever said pregnancy is weird is right!
My first thought too was maybe the baby is just crowding something making it worse. I hope you don't have too many problems as your pregnancy progresses!
glad you're feeling better! I definitely get shortness of breath (exacerbated by shortness of torso, I think), especially when I'm lying down - even when I'm super propped up. Isn't pregnancy fun?
I have heart palpitations (makes me feel even more anxious than normal) and random incidences of shortness of breath (which makes me dizzy) but my Dr says as long as it's an occasional occurrence, she isn't concerned about it.

I figured it was a normal symptom since I've read about and expected it. I have palpitations/chest pain sometimes too but I recently found out I have mitro-valve prolapse so that's only to be expected.
I'm surprised that this could be a serious problem. I have shortness of breath after mild exertion (e.g. climbing the stairs) and sometimes on lying down, but it goes away quickly so I guess it's not a big deal. I figured it was a normal symptom since I've read about and expected it. I have palpitations/chest pain sometimes too but I recently found out I have mitro-valve prolapse so that's only to be expected.
I think it just depends on the severity and extent. Shortness of breath that goes away quickly probably isn't a huge deal. But you and the baby both need oxygen, so if you can't breathe at all (even for a short period) or if you are short of breath for a long time (signaling restricted/inflamed airways) you might need some medical intervention to rectify the situation.

Thank you! That is helpful clarification. I think it's more just being out of breath after I exert myself (I can breathe, I'm just breathing hard) and sometimes I feel like I can't get deep breaths in when I lie down, but changing position helps and I try to keep it from escalating into hyperventilating by thinking calmly. So even though I feel as though I can't breathe, I remind myself that I can and it doesn't last long.
